Help me get over myself-or convince me I'm not crazy

I feel like I'm being really petty about this, but I'm struggling so hard with what should be a fairly simple decision. I need to buy a tub (like three months ago, I know I know) for my HB, because my midwife already gave the one she had told mei could use to another client who is due April 30... I'm kind of upset about it, honestly, but that's a whole 'nother post... anyway, I have a couple choices, one of which is basically a kiddie pool covered in fish and whatnot. That one is 20 bucks on amazon. The one I *want* is made for birthing and does not have cartoons/drawings all over it. But it's about a hundred dollars more. I know I could make do with the fish one, and it even has potential to be fun for m all summer if we used a liner with it. I just can't imagine all my pictures and everything with that pool. we can afford the more expensive one, but it is money out of our snowball if we do that. And since it's totally last minute it's not like I can just cut my fun money for a couple months or anything. Ugh. What would my EFFers do? to make it more EFR, either pool I choose will be reused-both have liners you can purchase separately. If I bought the kiddie pool I'd buy a liner up front and then use it for play. If I bought the birth-specific pool I probably wouldn't use a liner but I could *hopefully* sell it to someone else who wanted to purchase a liner as well. We are done after this I think, so I wouldn't hold on to it.

  • I am cheap and I would probably go with the kiddie pool.  However, I could see those little fish being irksome to you through the process reminding you of not having the pool you expected.  Not knowing enough about it, would the liner cover the fish any?  Also, you talked about re-selling the birthing pool.  I'm guessing you've already looked into buying one used for yourself.

  • Yeah, i've posted on all the local forums I'm part of and no one is biting :( I haven't found a liner for the kiddie pool that isn't transparent, or I would happily go with that. I guess I'm just worried that so much or natural birth is mental as well as physical and not being 100% happy with my environment will have a negative effect on the birth process.
  • I'd go with the fish, but I'm cheap.
  • If the fish will annoy you and take your focus off the birth and the experience I'd say it is worth it to go with the other pool. Are you going to look at every picture and think "oh that GD pool  with the fish"? I probably would. Besides, if it's your last one, have it the way you want it to be. I think you deserve it. And, you can resell it, so that's good too. There's my two cents :)

  • Just thought of something...is there a way to rent one that would be somewhere in the middle of the kiddie pool and the expensive birthing pool?

I was going to ask the same thing.  I know places up here rent birth tubs.  That's what most HB moms do.  I would definitely check into that.

  • I ditto the renting a birthing tub.

Other than that does the birthing specific tub have hard/sturdy sides? If it does I would definitely shell out the extra cash. I rented a hard sided tub and just imagine leaning against or squeezing the sides of a kiddy pool and having it fall over, not support you or exploding KWIM.

  • If you can't rent one, I would buy the birthing pool and try to sell it when you're done with it.

If it's that important to you and it's not like $1000, I say if you're going to try to have a natural birth experience, you deserve to do it in the pool of your #1 choice :-)

  • I would be concerned that the kiddie pool wouldn't have high enough sides. If it did, my cheap self would go with that one.

have I told you that I love you?!? Honestly that's what I wanted to hear. I can't rent one down here, the MWs that do that reserve them for their own clients. I wish I could! And to mail order rent one would be just as much as buying it, with the added hassle of a deadline to return it on rather than just packing it up til I'm ready to deal with it again. as far as differences between the pools, I do know several women who have used the cheaper pool and had good experiences, and it is available onthe same website as the more expensive one. The 'extras' (other than visual) that make A plain one my preferrd choice are things like handles, the shape (oval vs. round) and reinforced sides to help the MWs too. I'm generally so frugal that I'm surprised this is a hard decision, but I really think I would be happiest with the plain one. And since we aren't putting a ton of money into other 'stuff' for the baby, maybe I'll validate my spending that way :P
