It took me a while to get this down on paper- we have had a really busy couple of weeks! This is going to be long, so feel free to scroll down and skip the rant. I know hearing birth stories really helped me so I thought I might share mine! The one thing I do want to mention is something my yoga instructor said- that the baby will come out in its own way and on its own schedule. I was really able to enjoy my birth experience more knowing that!
I went into labour on
Saturday morning around 3:45 am, and had really intense contractions 5
mins apart for about a minute each ALL DAY. My doula came over around
10 am and started labouring with me at home. I had a really long
labour- the contractions kept getting more intense and around 5 pm or
so got about 3 minutes apart. Unfortunately, I had a really
unproductive labour. Although intense, the contractions really weren't
doing much. I went from 0 cm dilated at 10 am to about 3 cm dilated at
8 pm, and couldn't get any rest all day. I assessed the situation with
my doula and we decided that I was going to go to the hospital and try
to get some sort of pain relief (we decided to go with the epidural)
for a couple of hours, just to take the edge off and let me get some
sleep so that I could start again with my batteries charged in the
morning so that I could still have my med- free birth.
We
got to the hospital around 9 pm, and when I got checked I was still
less than 4 cm dilated. They admitted me and took me back to my room. I
was really nervous about getting the epidural, even for such a short
amount of time, but I was glad that it was my decision and it wasn't
forced on me. I knew that my body really needed to get a little bit of
rest before it could do its job! The anaesthesiologist came in and
spoke to me about the epidural. He was really great about the whole
thing, and did a fantastic job. I got the epi around 11 pm. I could
still move my legs and had no discomfort- I could no longer feel the
contractions and I got an hour of sleep. Around midnight, my water
broke and I woke gasping from the strange sensation. They checked me
and I was complete and ready to push! I guess that all my body really
needed was some rest and relaxation before I could get the baby out!
Everyone was astounded that I made progress so quickly.
I
pushed for less than 20 minutes and had my beautiful baby GIRL!! at
1:46 am on Monday the 29th of March. Arya Lakshmi Hazelbaker weighed 7
lbs, 3 oz at birth, measured 19 in long. I had second degree tears and lost 2 cups of blood, but I'm much better now and would do it all over again!!
I am EBFing and it is going
really well! We are really enjoying this time as a new family. I hope
all of you have satisfying birth experiences like I did!
