Anyone drinking any protein shakes?

I've been meaning to purchase some protein shakes for snacks. Are there any out there that are safe and potentially low in carbs?

Re: Anyone drinking any protein shakes?

  • I am a trainer and drink shakes pretty much daily and as a meal replacement. If you are lookin for quick and easy you can get myoplex low carb...

I like to make my own with fresh fruit. I take a cup of ice, half of cup on fruit I want, a scoop of vanilla whey protein ( i use BSN lean dessert found at gnc) and mix! yum yum!

  • NOt really low in carbs, but I've on occassion had an EAS chocolate whey protein shake.  My Dr. said that they are safe for the LO and they are great b/c they are stacked with protein.  We get the powder and mix it with skim milk b/c it is less expensive than getting the premixed drink :)

  • I drink was DH has. Those huge tubs of powder mixed with milk gets it at a local place - kind of like a GNC. I thow in some frozen fruit, too. Never looked at the carbs I guess. They fill me up when I know it might be a while before I get to eat at work.

  • I prefer to stick with real foods instead of chemically processed powders.

  • I do about 5 mornings a week. I have GD so I'm always looking for low carb options (and I don't like eggs). I use vanilla soy protein powder. Ds is milk protein sensitive so that way he can taste some if he wants. I use 3 sm scoops of powder, soy vanilla milk, crushed ice, about 2 tbs peanut butter and a banana. Yummy! I keep meaning to do it with fruit but I'm a little worried about the extra sugar in the morning.

  • Belhurst,

Its not that I don't eat "real" food, its that I have GD and need the extra protein. But thanks anyway.

  • There are plenty of real foods you can eat to keep up your protien intake while watching your sugar intake. If you're not sure how to eat ask to be referred to a dietician.

  • Good to know these are safe during pregnancy.  Not sure why I thought they weren't, but my husband always says to wait til after the baby.  I was a vegertarian most of my life and just started eating really basic chicken breast a few years ago b/c of lack of protein...   i usually eat a thing of greek yogurt a day which does have a lot of protein, but it's good to know I can make fruit shakes too!

    This.

Have you tried Greek yogurt (I like to get the plain and add fruit myself to cut down on sugar)? I also like hard boiled eggs as a snack. And nuts.

I know how to "eat", and have been referred to a dietician. I was just seeking other opinions and experiences of people who have or are drinking protein shakes. You don't know me, but there are certain foods, high in protein that I can't eat or like.

FYI - my nutritionist highly recommended that I use protein powder. I've had several dieticians and nutritionists recommend it. I mix in fresh fruits.

and yes, I also eat "real" food.

  • I love Muscle Milk. I have a tub of the banana flavor and make it with skim milk and frozen strawberries. Definitely the best tasting one IMO.

I haven't tried Greek yogurt but eat a kind that's low in carbs. I can't add fruit because it adds extra carbs because of the sugar.
  •

Muscle milk is good but its a little too high in calories for me (when I am in training mode)

BSN came our with a protein shake called Syntha-6 (I havent done this one since being pregnant) but they have a carmel latte flavor which is to dye for... I'd make my own fraps!

  • I use Spirutein.

I think they have about 20 flavors and aren't highly expensive like some brands.  I've never tasted one I didn't like, and I tend to buy a flavor variety so I can make different flavored smoothies with them and not get bored. Wink

Thanks! I'll check this one out too.
  • Let me think of what else I've used for protein, I also have to watch my carb intake. (I did ketogenic diet for years for seizures though I'm off it now).

I eat a lot of salads... I fry up tofu and toss it in for protein. If I find my favorite oil/vinegar recipe for a salad, I'll post it... I'm looking. :]

you can also find them at GNC. Vitamin Shoppe might sell it too. I forget. I typically get it at the Co-op.

Also, Larabars... it can add to nutrition intake... they arent "protein bars" but they aren't loaded with crap like a lot of those products.

  • Starbucks has a strawberry & banana smoothie and I think they add a tiny bit of protein powder to it.  You can always ask for it w/o it too!  It's delish! HTH!

I eat a lot of salads too with some kind've protein in it and try to limit my dressing.
  • This is my favorite too.  I blend it with fat free milk or a yogurt and water and fruit.
