3rd Trimester

Non-Alcoholic beer ---- I gave in!

I have been dying for a beer for the last 8.5 months and I finally saw a post that reminded me that there is such a thing as non alcoholic beer out there. So last night I went to supper with DH and ordered one and got carded. Ok - no biggie at 22 I expect that. Then the waitress brought it out and I took a drink and was amazed that it was sooooo good! Then I looked at the label. "... contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume..."

WHAT!? It's non alcoholic which should equate to NO ALCOHOL AT ALL!!!

It was really good though. So I ask, would any of yall drink a "non alcoholic beer", even one, while you're expecting LO?

Uhhh, since I would have no idea whats really IN it, probably not.

  • I had a couple Super Bowl weekend and felt really guilty at first but then I posted on here and found out I wasn't the only one so it helped ease the guilt...
  • I'm not really a beer drinker anyway, so I wouldn't get that. I do know they have a small amount of alcohol in them, though. Which is weird since they're called "non" alcoholic. Federal regs must allow them to vary by a little in order to get to say "non". I did get a pina colada smoothie the other day at the smoothie shop, though!

  • You would essentially have to drink SIX n/a beers to equal the alcohol in a regular beer.  I wouldn't freak out.

With that being said, I am a beer drinker... and I think the n/a version are totally gross.  So I've abstained.  But I honestly wouldn't feel bad having one if they didn't take like crap.  Especially at this stage in the game.

  • I drink them all the time. It would take 6 of the NA beers to equal one regular beer.

  • yes i would and have. .5 means you would have too drink like almost a 12 pack to equal the alcohol in one reg beer.
  • I remember over Christmas thinking I'd like some non-alcoholic wine for the holiday and when I found some I also noticed the .5% thing on the label and decided against it :( I was bummed, even though I completely get that it would've been mostly likely just fine to have it.

I like to remind myself that even when I'm not pg or nursing, I dont' drink a whole lot and wine never really did it for me anyway. Same with beer. So if what I really want is an espresso martini and there is no good sub for that, then, really, how good could this $5 bottle of wine really be y'know? lol

  • Yes, I drink them all the time. The alcohol content is about the same as mouthwash so am not concerned whatsoever just relax and enjoy Big Smile
  • I have some in my fridge!  Granted, each time I've cracked one open (twice now) I only get through half of it, but it definitely quenches my thirst when I'm craving it!  If it makes you feel better, because it did me, Claudia Schiffer craves and partakes in a non-alcoholic beer every once in a while during her pregnancy.  Don't worry about the .5% ~ everyone has their opinions and you'll hear both on this post.  I say, enjoy it!

  • From what I've read, the non-alcoholic beers legally have to put the "... contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume..." tagline on their label. It's possible that they may contain up to 0.5% alcohol, but it's more than likely the % is much lower. As someone else posted, even at 0.5% alcohol, it would take 6 NA beers to equal 1 beer, and you can encounter that same amount of alcohol in other products. I don't see a problem with a NA beer here or there, especially when I remember a lot of people in their early 2nd trimester having a glass of real wine during the holidays. But it's a personal decision :)

  • I wouldn't have a NA beer, because I don't like how they taste. The .5% alcohol would not concern me. If I'm in the mood for beer, I have my husband order one and I take a sip.

  • Considering a lot of doctors say that an entire regular beer is okay at 3-6% alcohol and a NA beer has no more than  0.5%, I feel completely fine drinking an NA beer. In fact, I have probably had about 12 of them throughout my pregnancy. I really like Buckler.

  • I might have an occasional near beer if I could stand the smell of beer at all.  Poor DH has even given up his Michelob during this pg because he knows how bad the smell makes me feel.  Plus he says he feels guilty drinking in front of me, lol.  So sweet.

I do however, have a small glass of red wine here and there.  OB and pediatrician both gave me the okay, soooo

    ...bottoms up!

  • Enjoy it ! I have them all the time and they are good, esp in social situations where everyone is drinking.
  • I just visited Colorado and we went to the Miller-Coors brewing company and I must admit...I gave in too! How do you resist a fresh beer tapped right out of the Rockies Beer

Lol actually mouthwash has tons of alcohol in it but it's not like you drink it. A saw an "Intervention" once where an alcoholic had to resort to drinkin mouthwash. But I get what you are saying:)

This, and by small I mean like maybe 3 little sips over an hour.

  • Loved reading your post bc I've wondered the same thing. I drank a few in my first tri w/o even realizing what the label said. Since then I've probably had a total of 6-10 NA beers throughout the pregnancy. I figured with a stomach full of food it would burn off before ever getting into my bloodstream. Now, that I'm in the 3rd tri I'm not as worried about it. I drink O'douls.

I work 5 minutes from there :)  I have only ever been there once in my whole life and I am a Colorado native.

  • I would totally have one too.  My friends brought me up a bottle of Non alcoholic wine also and it had the same .5% label.    The wine didn't do it for me, tasted like bad grape juice.
