Teen babysitters - How much to pay?

How much do you pay your babysitter per hours? I don't mean day care provider, just the sitter you would use on a Friday night to go to the movies or something.

We are leaving DS with a non-family sitter for the first time on Saturday.  It's the daughter of some family friends, so I want to be sure we pay her fairly.

TIA

  • I am interested to see the answers to this question since DH and I were just talking about this. I was guessing 9 per hour and he thought it was a little higher for an infant. I guess it depends on how qualified the babysitter is.

  • Our sitter is 19 and lives just down the street from us with her parents while she attends college and works at Taco Bell.  She charges $5/hour and we usually round (way) up.  If she babysits for 4 hours we'll giver her $30 - $40 depending on how much cash we have on us.  She's FANTASTIC with our son.
  • Great question, I was just talking about this with the girls at work the other day. One of the girls pays $10 for her 3 month old, and everyone said this was OUTRAGEOUS.

I personally thought it was a good number?!?

Most of the others pay $5-$7 per kid per hour. Seems low to me though?

  • See, that's why we always round up.  When I was in college I got $10-12/hour but I went to college in the northern suburbs of Chicago.  But still, it just feels wrong to only pay $5/hour.
  • My coworker's daughter is a junior in HS and she charges $10/hr.  I thought it was reasonable, considering 10 years ago when I was 16 I made $6/hr babysitting.

  • $8-12/hour seems to be the rate-range we've come across. I like to think about how much they'll be "playing" vs. sleeping too. If the sitter is there and my DD is asleep the whole time ... I'm more inclined to pay on the low end of the range.

  • For a high schooler $8 an hour is fine- its easier than working retail and they can watch TV when the kids go to bed. For college I was say $10/hr minimum.
