Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Scary stuff.

So this morning at abour 330am DH woke up to a 'weird' noise in the house.  He got up to investigate (with his baseball bat) and a few seconds later came running back into the bedroom. Apparently, the house behind us was on fire.

So we called 911 and watched in our backyard as the house went up in flames.  Luckily, there was no wind last night.

Did I mention that I when I was in 2nd grade, the fireman came to talk to our class about fire safety and I'm been PETRIFIED of house fires ever since?  Yeah.  Needless to say, I didn't get any more sleep last night.

I don't think anyone was home, but I'm not sure.  Since they're on another street, I don't know them ... only their nosiy dogs, and I didn't hear anything of them at all.

  • That is scary. I've been terrified of fires since the "very special episode" of The Hogan Family when their house went up in flames. I think I was about 8 at the time - it really affected me for some reason.

Absolutely.  I was 7 I guess, and that night I had to sleep with my parents AFTER they checked every single electrical outlet in our home to make sure it was safe.  I'm still that paranoid.

  • OMG--so scary!!!!!!!   I posted below as a response to someone how our house started on fire in September --it was because DH was staining the deck and put a couple of the rags in the garbage--well, evidently they combusted over time so about 9:30 at night someone who happened to be roller blading at that weird time was banging on the door-----well, I was in the shower, DS was asleep and DH fell asleep like a rock on the couch---she went next door to our neighbors and they were all banging on our windows and doors---while the DH next door was taking his fire extinguisher and hose to it----and was about to kick in our door (he was a former police chief).  Scariest moment of my life when my DH comes storming in to the bathroom to tell me to grab DS and get out (our fire detectors hadn't gone off at that point b/c it was in the garage and not in the house yet).

Fires ARE scary---i will say that since then we put fire extinguishers all over the house----one right in our laundry room which seperates DS and our bedrooms upstairs (since many fires start in there)--and we have a ladder that goes out of DS's window just in case.  You never know!!!

  • Wow, I really hope everyone is OK!

  • So glad youg uys are ok & I hope your neighbors are.

I burned the entire palm of my hand on a kerosine heater when I was about 9 or 10. 2nd degree burns. Ever since than I've been petrified of heat like that. Fires what have you. That would of freaked me the "F" out.

We have a smoke detector in every room in the house INCLUDING the garage for this very reason.  I think this particular fire started on their back porch though, because that was the biggest part of the fire at the beginning and it was also the first thing to fall over (it was covered).

  • That is really scary! I hope the dogs weren't in the house if the owners were away.
  • How scary!  Glad there wasn't any wind last night.

When I was 14 I was trapped in my moms bedroom while the house was on fire.  Our neighbor was the fire chief and home on lunch.  Everyone else was gone for the day so they assumed no one was home because there weren't any cars outside.  When he ran to the back of the house to turn the gas line off he saw me banging on the window.  Pulled the AC unit out of the window and pulled me to safety.  It was determined the fire was caused by a faulty wire on a lamp in our living room.  I am still paranoid about fires.  The sound of glass breaking woke me up and not the working smoke detectors.

  • That IS very scary! So devastating to lose everything. We check our fire alarms often because the thought of waking up to flames and not being able to get my children out terrifies me. Hope your neighbors are ok.

Yeah. Was it when the firefighter put the doll in a glass case and set it on fire? Because that undid me for years. I screamed and screamed at night. Terrified of fire.

    That's so scary :(

oh my god!  That sounds terrifying.  I would think something was wrong with you if you weren't still paranoid about fires.

  • Aw man. That was rough for you I bet being that it's your fear. I hope everyone in that house is ok. I teach science and have a fireman come to teach safety in my class. I also have the kids make up fire safety plans. I need to make one myself.

On a lighter note. You were in my dream last night haha you came to NYC and we partied!! lol

  • Yikes.  That's crazy.  2 summers ago, the house 2 doors down from us also went up in flames.  It took over a year for that poor family to move back into their 1 year old house...that had to be redone completely.

I too would be unable to sleep!  Did the fire dept get the fire contained enough, or did it burn to the ground?

They got it contained.  But pretty much the entire back of the home and the whole roof is gone.
