South Florida Babies

When did you start looking into childcare?

We don't have any family in the state, so we're definitely going to need to send the baby to daycare (or I'm hoping for a nice, loving, licensed in-home provider).

When is it appropriate to start looking into different providers? I'm still feeling like it's too early, but on the other hand, I'd hate to miss out on a good opportunity because we waited too long. TIA!

  • Aw, Dh and I are thinking of this already too.  I'm hoping MIL retires by the time babies come.  ::keeping fingers crossed::

What area are you in?  Maybe ask about daycares in your area, and the girls here can recommend... and you can be added to the wait list, which a lot of the good daycares have already.

  • Nadia was about 7 & 1/2 months old. Up until that point, my mil was going to watch her. Then she had to help my fil with his buisness & I found out she wasn't going to be able to do it. I always thought a liscensed home provider was my preferrred option & my sister worked with a lady years ago at a preschool who left to work from home. I went to visit her & fell in love. I did visit a few regular daycares & another in home provider in my area & it cemented my decision. Nadia started with Elsa at 9 months.
  • I got lucky though- it was summer when I registered her & Nadia started in august- Elsa had a few kids starting kindergarten & had space for Nadia. had it been mid school year I think it may have been more challenging. Why don't you call a few providers & see what they recommend?
  • I'm thinking of going back to work part time, at least for a while.  I think I'm going to be working mostly from home, so I can keep the baby with me and when I do have to go to the office, my mom has volunteered to help some and my DH's work has told him he can try a 4-day work week if he wants.  Only down side of that is that he already drives an hour each way, so a 10-hour day would turn into 12 hour days including travel and we'd see him even less.  We'll see.  I'm no help on the daycare though, since we're not looking for any.  On the other hand... if going back to work doesn't work out for me, I could watch your baby too!  :)

  • Honestly, I kind of knew where I was going before I got pregnant based on recommendations, but I checked out the place in person sometime in the middle of the pregnancy.
  • We started asking around for recommendations when I was probably about 4 or 5 months pregnant and had settled on a babysitter by the time I was 7 months pregnant.  She didn't start until I went back to work when L was almost 4 months old.
