Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I dont care... I love it.

I dont care that everyone says I should put the baby down 'sleepy but awake.'  I LOVE rocking him to sleep each night. I love the weight of his little body in my arms and smelling his baby smell. I love how his eyelids droop lower and lower and I get a sleepy smile.

I love singing to him as he falls asleep. Our favorites are "Dont Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith and "Whole New World" by...Aladin LOL.

DH said "What are you going to do when he is one and still wants to be rocked to sleep?"  My answer...

Rock him!

  • If it works for you and your family, tell the rest of the world to take a long walk on a short dock!
  • It depends on the night... sometimes I put him down drowsy, and sometimes I put him down after he's completely fallen asleep in my arms... I just go with my instincts I guess.

So, I agree, I love it, I love that I can rock my sweet baby to sleep in my arms, and I feel like there will come a day when he's too independent to be rocked to sleep by his mommy and it makes me sad.

I read that as "long walk on a short ***" at first.  Really changed the meaning, but equally as amusing!

  • I just read an article written by a woman who had problems getting her LO to sleep and felt guilty about rocking her to sleep when sleep training did not work for her family. It was in Canadian Today's Parent and written by Rebecca Karelse

"I spent months agonizing over how to help my child learn to sleep whtn I could have been enjoying the hours of cuddling."

"now I think about how I might have enjoyed all those hours cuddling my daughter had I not felt so guilty about it. And how could I feel guilty for giving her the best thing in the world: an expression of my love, the safety of my arms?"

    You are not alone!

  • I love love love our bedtime routine.  I give her a bath, then a nice warm bottle, then I rock her to sleep while her seahorse plays music for her.  I feel so close to her.  I will be incredibly sad when she doesn't want me to anymore.
    bishes be crazy
  • :)

Our DD would never fall asleep while rocking. She actually gets more frustrated that we're trying to hold her.

LOL!!!  That's awesome Chili!  long walk on short d!ck.  Interesting thought.....

  • I rocked my first DD everynight until she was about 18 months old!  I loved it.  In the beginning, I rocked until she was deeply asleep. When she got older, I would just rock her for a few minutes until she got sleepy and she would go to sleep on her own in her crib.  When we moved her out of the crib to a toddler bed, I traded in rocking for a bedtime story.  It was a smooth transition and now at almost 5 years old, she is and always was a great sleeper.  I don't regret a thing!

  • I nurse DS to sleep every night...and I absolutely love it. We won't be able to do it forever, but for now, I'm cherishing every moment! It works for us for the time being, so why fix what isn't broken?

  • I do a mix of both.  Most nights LO goes down awake but tired, other times he's cranky and wants his mommy.  I don't think there's anything wrong with parenting the way you want and need to parent / responding to your child's needs.  These boards (and books and TV and blah blah blah....) can get really rigid with "how it shoudl be done".  There is not right way - and the current knowledge always changes, while babies stay the same.  Go with your heart and your gut and you can't go wrong.
