Strict Bedrest

Hello ladies...

Can you describe what you can & vannot do on strict bedrest? such as is it ok to sit up? are you supposed to lay only on your sides, etc....

Re: Strict Bedrest

  • It depends on the reason you are on bed rest and how you are doing with it. I was initially told I could recline tilted on one side or the other, get up to shower or go to the potty, go upstairs 2 times per day, otherwise laying down all day on one side or the other. I have pre-e. I am now allowed to lay down all day except for meals, get up to go shower or potty, but no stairs or reclining because the pre-e is worse and I have only to make it to Monday for my induction.  They are trying to get me there because baby will be officially full-term Monday.

  • I think your doctor has to specify the activities that are allowedbased on your situation.  I really just wanted to say "hello" because we have the same due date and we are both on bedrest.  Big Smile.  I am new to this board, too.  Welcome.

  • For me (with a short cervix/cerclage) strict BR meant- up to use the bathroom, quick shower (preferably every other day) and I could eat meals sitting up.  Otherwise, stay reclined or on my sides.  Some girls have said that their docs wanted them reclined at 30 degrees.

I mostly stayed upstairs because that's where our only bathroom is.  DH would bring me breakfast in the morning, and pack a small cooler with lunch and drinks and snacks.  Then in the evening he would cook and bring up dinner...and do it all over again the next day.  Luckily for me, I only had to do a couple of weeks of this strict bedrest and then they put me back on modified which was more relaxed.

  • My doctor said strict bed rest = no sitting up whatsoever (even for meals), one 5-minute shower per day, and bathroom breaks only. The rest of the time, I was told to lay on either side, but my left side was preferable.

I was just released to modified bed rest last week, and can now sit up for meals, cook one meal a day for my family, and take up to 2 short car rides per week.

It sounds like all of us have different instructions, so I agree with the others that your doctor should let you know what they mean for your specific situation!
