? if you have Kaiser

I was thinking of seeing a dermatologist and I noticed on the Kaiser website it says I that office is by referral only.  I know this sounds stupid but do I actually have to go see my primary care Dr first or can they just refer me without seeing me?  It is just to have a few moles looked at so nothing super serious (well I hope not.)

Re: ? if you have Kaiser

  • You have to get the referral from your primary Dr.  Not sure if they have to see you or not.  Maybe send your Dr. and email and see how to go about it.

  • Try emailing your dr for the referral and then you don't have to pay to be seen by both drs.

SOME primaries will make you still come in to see them (but usually only for rashes because they can treat minor stuff).

  • You might be able to email your doctor.  I asked for the referral to have my moles checked when I was going in for a check-up.

  • We had to take Abby to a dermetologist and we were referred by her pedi.  I never asked for it, but she has a hemangeoma on her head and neck so her pedi wanted him to look at it.  I think your primary might want to see you 1st.  Good luck.
  • I don't think so.  I went to see a Kaiser dermatologist, and I don't remember exactly but I know I didn't go in to get referred.  I think what I did was email either my primary care doctor or maybe even my obgyn and I asked if I had to get a referral.  So probably whoever I emailed "referred" me, but without having to go in for a visit.  I'd say start with an email.    I love emailing my doctor.  It's so easy.  :)
  • I tired to get a referral to a derm for a mole check.  I emailed my primary, he made me come in, he said my moles were not moles and offered to remove them on the spot with liquid nitrogen (or some such thing).  I refused. I need to fire him and find someone who will refer me to a specialist. :(
  • Thanks everyone!  I'll try and email and see where that goes.  I've only seen her twice so I'm thinking I might have to go in.

  • Yeah, see if they will refer you by email...but also check around other Kaiser's. The one I go to doesn't require a referral for dermatology (but you also can't get in for two months) but the other office 10 minutes away does require them. It just depends...

    Ditto this exactly.

  • Walnut Creek has a "roaming" derm, so when I went to see my GP, she just went and grabbed the derm to look at the thing I was asking about, so I didn't have to wait for a referral.

Call advice and tell them you have some moles that are concerning you; they'll probably be able to squeeze you in quicker!

  • Email your doc and see if they will give you a referral. Again, it will depend on the doc if they want to see you first.
