Thurday April 1st I had to be at the hospital at 5am to be induced. I was also induced w/ DD so I was nervous but kind of knew what to expect. Or so I thought. I was taken to my room and blood was drawn, Fetal Monitor was hooked up & IV was started. By 7am the Pitocin was started. I was checked just prior to the Pitocin being started & was dialated to 1.5cm.
The pitocin was upped close to 6 times prior to the 11am shift change. I was having medium contractions lasting about 60 seconds each every 4 minutes. It was tolerable. The nurse had me in a rocking chair from around 9:30am til the shift change and the rocking seemed to help strengthen the contractions.
11:30am the new nurse came in and upped my pitocin again. I didn't like her as much as the 1st nurse, however I actually knew the 1st nurse (aunt of my neighbor) and I had her for a few shifts when I was in the hosp. giving birth to DD so I was just really comfortable with her.
Noon the new nurse said she was going to check for progress and OMG did it hurt. She had me laying on my fists to arch my back and she told me I was closed and high and was going to call my dr. since I wasn't progressing. This made NO sense to me since I was dialated and had been for 2 weeks. I told her that the other nurse said I was at 1.5cm & she said she'd get a dif. nurse w/ longer skinnier fingers to check me. I asked if I could pee while she did that and she unhooked the fetal monitor for me. I sat down to pee but I wasn't peeing, my water broke. I told her that liquid was coming out in a steady stream but I wasn't peeing so she rushed me off the toilet & back to bed. Sure enough, the other nurse came in & I was at 3cm. This "new" nurse went right through my cervix and broke my flippin water.
So to my luck the anastesiologist (sp?) was busy prepping people for c-sections, but I was put on the epidural list. Once she broke my water my contractions were really bad. I actually was laying there w/ tears rolling down my cheeks but didn't even realize it til DH wiped them away.
2pm the dr. comes in to give me the epidural. I went 7 hours w/ out any pain meds at all and my contractions were spiking the top of the chart, lasting 90 seconds and every 2 minutes apart. The epidural was great, I finally got some relief. I thought I'd get to nap.
He was done & out of the room by 2:30pm. At 3pm the nurse comes in to check me and I'm at 4cm. DH & I started doing some word find puzzles to pass the time. 4pm she came back in to check me and I was at 6cm. She said she'd start prepping the room. She called my dr. who was actually delivering another baby at the other hospital he works with that is about 15 minutes away from the hospital I was at. I had told the nurse that I go from 6 to 10 VERY fast, this happened w/ DD too.
4:15pm I felt a popping sensation, I can't really explain it better then that. I asked the nurse to check me again and she said it was probably just my water breaking more. I was at 8cm.
4:30pm they couldn't find the baby's heartbeat anymore. They said they'd use a monitor that they'd place on his head. My BP kept dropping so they put me on oxygen as well. When they went to insert the monitor they said I was at 10cm.
5pm my dr. arrived and checked me and he said I was complete. He talked to the nurses for a few minutes, they told me I could labor down for a few minutes. 5:20pm my dr. told me to do one push so he could get a feel of where things were. ONE push and Jackson came nearly completely down the birth canal. My dr. said "ok, stop stop stop". One more push and his head was out. The cord was wrapped around his neck once. His shoulders got stuck. 3 pushes to unstick his shoulders and one final push to get him out.
It took me 4 minutes to push him out total.
Jackson Robert Born 4/1/10 @ 5:24 PM, 7lb 15oz, 20 & 3/4 inches long.
He came out so fast that his head had some minor bruising and he had a bunch of spots all over his face. He was also born blue but after about 1 minute (which seemed like an eternity) of rubbing him down he let out his 1st cry and then I started w/ the tears of joy. :-)
I didn't need one stitch. I was shocked considering he got stuck. I had no muscular trauma either. Needless to say, recovery has been a breeze. I have had very minimal pain. Jackson is doing well, latching like a pro, he sleeps at night and is such a little cutie! Amber is adjusting perfectly into the big sister role.
Re: My little man is here (birth story) & PsIP
WOW!!
1st I can't believe that nurse broke your water and didn't even realize it
2nd It's amazing how fast your little one came rushing down the canal
3rd CONGRATS & he is adorable!! (So is your daughter!)
I have been meaning to get on and post but as luck would have it, DH came down w/ the stomach flu this week, so here I am a mom of a year & a half and a 4 day old (at the time) w/ a husband who can't stay off the toilet. It has been a crazy crazy week. Today DH is helping & feels better so he's napping w/ DD and DS is also napping..... :-) I'm in heaven LOL.
