I can't tell heads from tails either. I have an anterior placenta, so maybe that's why. I even asked my doctor last week which way was up, but he said baby was to small to tell yet. I thought it was strange, but I'll go with it.
The only reason I know what I'm feeling is because my midwife confirmed that he's head down, and has his back facing my belly. I know that he's probably not going to flip, since he's measuring large. He does keep his feet/butt in my ribs all the time though.

I'm not gonna lie - I couldn't ever tell. It wasn't until the doctor told me she'd dropped that I realized I'd been rubbing her butt. Other than that, I've never really been able to feel around and actually outline body parts.
I get a head or a butt lodged under my breast bone. I asked my OB which it was, and all she could tell me was that it was a head or a butt. (I suspect head, since kicks are low and to the sides.) They won't tell me head down or not until my first internal at 36 weeks.
It has been getting easier now that he is so much bigger. I can even tell feet from knees Hiccups in my a$$ helped to tell me when he turned head down.
Whoever tells you they can...I think is lying. I can't tell. I can feel something hard but whether is a bottom or his head, I don't know. I even asked my dr. on monday and she said she "thinks" the head is down. But they found the heartbeat in the same spot for the last 8 weeks, right above my belly button, which indicates that he is either breach or up really high.
The dr said they won't know for sure until my first internal at 38 weeks or until the ultrasound if I go to 40 weeks.
I can't really tell what is what. When I feel that there is a round, hard part I am guessing that it is either his head or butt. I am no good at knowing what part is what.

Baby has been head down since 30 weeks on me and so I always assumed that the big ass bump that moves around is his butt. Yesterday though for the first time I felt his feet run up the inside of my tummy one after the other, it was the weirdest feeling ever, and then later I felt his arm or hand move, I could only tell because of how big the parts were and where they were located. Much smaller than the big butt movement! Oh, I felt one foot sometime this last week as well poking out at the top of my tummy for a split moment. It startled me because I didn't think I'd ever be able to discern!
I have a male co-worker that said one of his friends when she was pregnant had a baby who would stretch out and you could see the feet and or hand bumps. He said it was the creepiest thing he'd ever seen. lol
Definitely not alone. I asked my midwife yesterday to tell me what position he was in cause I was clueless. And my guess as to where his butt was - totally wrong (he's sunny side up right now)
I question anyone who says they "know" what parts they are feeling. I can tell butt, only b/c I know where her head is, and when I feel a relatively-wide bump at the opposite end, then that's gotta be tushie. As for elbows vs fist or knees vs foot, unless you've had severe abdominal muscle separation, I don't think you can tell what's what.

Same thing here. I have AP too and I have an idea when I'm feeling LO's butt or feet, but I'm not sure. I asked my OB at my appt. this week and she said the same thing: baby is too small to distinguish parts yet. She said maybe in another few weeks she'll be able to point out where everything is. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed, but oh well.
Re: Anyone in 3rd tri not able to feel baby body parts?
My BFP Chart
i can't. my first baby moved around a lot more and was transverse a lot so i could differentiate head from butt.
this baby is quite content to stay put in the same position and do little movements. he isn't giving me enough to determine body parts.

You are not alone
I cannot tell....all I know is that I feel a hard round lump in my upper stomach and sometimes a hart oblong part (assuming foot?) along my side.
I do know that this baby is spread eagle in there b/c I feel him from side to side, up and down!!

I've got the general positioning down - head down, hiccups & heartbeat way down low, most movement just above my belly button.
But as for what's butt & what's knees - I haven't a clue.
& LOL at "hiccups in the a$$" that's sooo true!
