Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

completely douchey comment I overheard:

two women; one of them was Very Hugely Pregnant.

I think, says the non-pregnant woman, parents who choose to name their daughters a name that ends in -son are disappointed that they had a girl instead of a boy.

I don't know what prompted this comment. I don't know if this was a snarky comment on the pregnant's choice of name for her unborn, if these women were friends, or if it was something else entirely. I was taken aback though. What a weird thing to say.

Re: completely douchey comment I overheard:

  • lol people say that all the time to me. "uh do you just wish you had boys". F no i don't. i just like boyish names.

  • I've seen that sentiment on the Baby Names board as well (also about people who give their daughters traditionally male names).

    Weird.

  • That's weird and makes no sense at all!
  • So it isn't at all possible that people just like the name? Right. Idiots.

  • What an odd conclusion to draw about names. I would never even think the two were related.

they were both adults. DEF not teenagers, lol.

and yeah, people are really, really stupid.

  • Sounds like a joke to me.
  • People do realize that Ashley and Laurie were originally boy names, right?
  • My name is Allison...hummm, maybe I should ask my mom if she wanted a boy.

     Some people are such idiots!

  • Odd.  We named DD a tradionally male name because we liked it, not because we wished she was a boy.  I have always wanted a little girl and that is what I got.
  • Ha, my best friend would beg to differ.  She has two boys and desperately wanted a girl.  She recently had her third baby and got her much-wanted girl.  Her name?  Madison.

  • My name is Alison.  I'm pretty sure my mom was pumped I was a girl.  I think she just liked the name.  Weird.

I don't really care about it, and name trends change, but I do think the idea of the trend towards girl names that mean, literally, "son of (insert here)" is weird. I don't think that people who pick them are generally thinking in that direction, but I do think the trend is a little odd. I mean, if I had a son and named in Olafsdotter (aside from the fact that it's just a wacky name) I think people who realize it means "Olaf's daughter" would go "huh?"

And the thing that I find weirdest about the trend is that now it's kind of hard to see naming a little boy a name that means "(Whoever's) Son" and have it not sound like a girl's name. It's a co-opting of an entire line of meanings for exactly the opposite purpose.

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I really LOVE the name Ashleigh (gone with the wind) and Loren for boys names.  I'm sure dh would practically suffocate from laughter if I seriously suggested them, but i do love them.

I knew the dreamiest guy in high school named Loren.....sigh.  lol

I didn't mean that they don't realize the definition, just that they aren't picking Madison because it means "son of Matthew."

And in a side note, I think it sucks that I had to go Scandinavian to find a daughter-centric equivalent.
