Eco-Friendly Family

How do I bring this up to our daycare?

I love our daycare provider.  They're great with dd.  It's a fairly large center; ~7 kids in the infant room, and more in subsequent rooms, so somewhere around 60 to 70 kids, I'd guess.

One thing I don't love about the place is that it always smells like cleaning products.  I'm glad they keep the place clean, but the smell bothers me for the 5 minutes I'm there a day, it can't be good for DD to be breathing that in all day.  I don't know what they use, but I saw a bottle of some fluorescent pink something.  Definitely not eco-friendly, I'm sure.  I don't know how to propose they use something else.  If it was a small place I woudln't hesitate, but it's a large center.

The two women that run it are lovely, they know our daughter and love her.  They think it's great that we cloth diaper, and I know that one of them CD's their daughter as well.  So I think they might be open to this possibility if I approach it right.

Any suggestions?

  • I'd start the conversation by asking what type of cleaning products they use in the daycare.

If they confirm that harsh chemicals, etc are used.  The next step would be to inquire if the center would be interested in transitioning to less harsh cleaning products and let her know that you would support that change.

    Good luck!

We are touring DCs soon and the cleaning question is on my list :)

  • i know nothing about DCP regulations, but I'd start by looking to see if the state mandates anything, or what they allow. I'd look at that first before i even brought it up personally.

I was thinking this, too. Plus, it comes down to cost. That florescent pink stuff can be bought at the dollar store for probably .50/bottle or wholesale for a similar price. I think if they are willing to/allowed to make a change, I might ask other parents if they'd be willing to support a donation effort of more EF products because I'm sure the center will ultimately say something like, "Well, if you want your tuition to go up..."

Yeah, I did think about that.  But it's not a cheap center, in fact it's on the upper end as far as cost is concerned.  I guess just starting the conversation will help.  If I'm not accusatory and offer to help then maybe they'll be interested as well.  The ladies that run it have children in the center as well.  Would it be too obnoxious to bring along studies that discuss the effect of chemicals on children?  (asthma, allergies, etc., not to mention unknown effects from some of these chemicals.)

I think so.  It seems like that approach would put them on the defensive right away.  As others have suggested, look up regulations first to make sure that it doesn't say specifically, for example, that bleach must be used.  If not, then I would just ask what they use and start the conversation that way.
