3 week old has a cold:(

DS and I went through the 24 hour flu bug last week. Then DH got a cold, that DS caught and now I've caught...and now my poor little 3 week old Myla caught:( She is so stuffy, and sneezes alot, and struggles when she drinks her bottle.. No coughing, thank goodness! Anyone know what to do to help releive her stuffy nose? Those stupid "bulb" things don't work!

Re: 3 week old has a cold:(

  • I have one bulb that doesn't work, it's a white one from Walmart. The blue one from the hospital works though.. I think probably some saline drops should loosen the mucous enough that it can run out/be sucked out...

  • Also, prop up one end of her crib/bassinet (use a blanket under the mattress).  That can help too.
  • Our 3 (almost 4) week old is in the middle of a cold, too.  Pedi recommended Little Noses saline drops and bulb syringe (we use the blue one from the hospital, it works fine).  The pedi did say that most of the congestion will be too far up in his sinuses to get out, unfortunately (even if it sounds like it's right there).  We also propped up one end of his bassinet, so that his head is elevated.  Poor guy is miserable :(

  • Keep a close eye on Myla Shakerbaker....Dean was hospitalized for 4 days at 3 weeks old with RSV. If she starts to have trouble eating (I know you mentioned she was but I mean like she can't suck at all) or breathing take her to the ER asap. Dean had a bad cough though and you said Myla doesn't. That's a good thing! Also, take her temp regularly. A fever is common with RSV.

    Things that will help

    1. Like PP mentioned, get saline and put one drop in each nostril before you suction. I know the blue bulbs suck but it's really all you have to work with.

    2. Suction her before EVERY feeding, before EVERY nap and before bed at night. (Try not to shove that bulb too far up her nose, they get swollen and irritated REALLY easily)

    3. THIS REALLY HELPED DEAN: When you burp her add an extra 5 minutes of back patting. This helps tobreak up the thick mucus and will hopefully prevent the thick snot from lining the walls of her lungs...if it's in her lungs?

    4. Elevate her while she sleeps...pillow under the mattress?

    5. I didn't do this but was told my the ER pedi to add pedialite to her breastmilk/formula to thin it out...if they are reallly congested they have a hard time getting the thick BM and F down.

I just replied to your "no prob" PM and it said "user not found" and didn't send it to you! UGH. Don't have time to try again. PM me with anymore ?'s you have about Myla's cold...I will check this evening.
