if you pump exclusively -?

How long are you pumping for at each session? How often are you pumping? Everytime DC eats or every 2-3 hours no matter if they go 4 hours in b/w eating? I am still trying to get DS to breastfeed but it just isn't going well :( i still really want him to at least have some breast milk so i want to make sure my supply stays good. thanks ladies!

  • i pump for about 15-20 min every time DS eats, which ends up being 9-10 times in a 24hr period.

  • My boy will only nurse at night, he eats breast milk through a bottle during the day and I am going back to work so I decided not to fight him on it.  I pump every 2-3 hours to keep up my supply.

  • I pump every 2-3 hours for about 15 minutes per side. I've heard if you want to increase your supply to pump for 2-3 minutes after the last drop comes out on each side. I've been doing this for about three days and notice a slight increase.

  • When she was first born, I pumped everytime or almost everytime she ate.  Slowly, I started spacing pumpings out and now, at 6 weeks, I pump every 3-4 hrs during the day and go all night without pumping.  I have not noticed a decrease in supply at all.  Usually ends up being 5 pumpings a day for 10 min at a time.  The morning supply is obviously the most after going all night and i get rougly 5 oz per side then.  Other times it varies between 1.5 and 3.
  • I was pumping about every 2.5 hours while I was on mat leave. Now that I'm back at work, I pump every 3-4 hours. The length of time varies because I just pump until there's no more milk. Sometimes it's 10 min, sometimes 20+.

  • I pump every 2.5 hrs during the day and every 3.5 hrs at night for about 10-12 minutes.
  • I was very lucky.  When I was EPing (for the first 6 weeks) I only pumped 3-4 times per day (and never overnight) with an ouput of 10-13oz total each time.  I was able to keep up with DS's appetite without supplementing with formula.

You really should just pump every 2-3 hours no matter if he goes 4 hours or not - in order to establish a good supply.  Once your supply has been established then you can start dropping pumping sessions and it will get easier.  If you are still trying to BF then I would just pump after each attempted feeding.  That way you always have milk in there to give him.  What's the problem - latch?  You should contact a LC - or LLL.  Good luck.
