PSA on carseats in the shopping cart

Leaving Walmart yesterday Gage almost fell off the shopping car. He was in his carseat on the cart like I see everyone else do. We hit a bump and he went flying. Thankfully DH is fast and caught it before he hit the ground.

I almost hard a heart attack. I was talking to my co-workers and apparently it isnt safe to put the carseat up there. I never knew that, so I thought I'd share.

  • First of all, so glad that your DS is safe and sound!  I have heard that this wasn't safe...our carseat wasn't even made with the openings to put in on a shopping cart.  At first I thought, what the heck, but then the more I researched it the more I was glad it didn't!!

  • I NEVER put it on top for this reason!

Yeah, freaked the eff out.  I will probably use the Snuggli from now on.

  • Yep, we always use the stroller no matter what.
  • oh no! Glad your LO is ok!  I see people doing this all the time. I tried putting the seat up front one time and our car seat was not secure at all, plus I couldn't see over it. I am too short!

  • I am suprised there is not a warning label on the carts. The first time I put E in one, I realized it was nusteady. If I use the carseat, I put it in the big part and put the groceries around her.

  • We learned this in our car seat safety class - although I wouldn't have put it up there anyway.  Whenever we go shopping somewhere with a cart, I just put the whole seat in the basket.  OR I wear him in the Moby or Baby Bjorn.  I have a friend who is a special needs teacher and at the school where she works there are two children who lost significant brain function as a result of falling out of the cart in the car seat :(

  • I thought I was just doing something wrong! I have never been able to figure out how to get the carseat to feel steady on a shopping cart. Glad I've never gone ahead and left him up there, although I've seen tons of people do it. Like I said, I always thought it was just me.

Hank's carseat goes in the big part of the basket too.  The Britax we bought doesn't even have the slats that allow it to sit in the shopping cart like everyone does...  Kinda glad it doesn't because I had no idea it was so unstable.

Same here.  Glad your LO is safe.

  • The only time I put DS in the top of the cart is when his carseat snaps/locks into place. Our local grocery store and Target both have carts where the hook on the back of DS's carseat actually locks around one of the bars on the cart.

It doesn't work at Walmart so he always goes in the big part of the cart.

  • I could be wrong but I believe in my car seat manual it tells you not to do that, yet I see it done everywhere.  It makes my husband nervous so he takes the stroller with us even in the grocery store and the few times we have done it he somehow used the buckle to hold the car seat there.

  • Maybe it's just me...but isn't it common sense to not do that unless the carseat firmly locks into place? I mean, it has disaster written all over it.

  • I have been afraid to do the balancing act and found a decent solution...I put the car seat in the big part of the cart and bring my own bags to the store and use mommy hooks to hook them to the outside of the cart (and on the handle) and pack my stuff into the bags as I shop. It's great at my grocery store where I can actually scan my stuff so they definitely don't think I'm stealing, and elsewhere no one has actually asked what I am doing and I just dump the bags onto the register belt. It makes for a wider load in the aisle, but it works and allows me to do errands that I otherwise couldn't with DS.

This is what I do.  It makes me so scared when I see carseats in the child seat of carts.

  • I always put DD on the top of the cart, but her car seat locks onto the cart, so it can't fall off.. Plus, I'm right in front of her pushing the cart so..
