I need weaning help! (kinda long)

So, for medical reasons I need to wean my EBF 6 month old baby girl and I am having trouble! I tried to give her a bottle with some Enfamil in it and she refused to eat it. So then I pumped and tried to give her a bottle of 2 oz breastmilk and 1 oz Enfamil, still refused it. I've never given her a bottle before so my DH tried to give it to her with no success.

Next, I added the Enfamil to the rice cereal she's been eating for the last few days (happily I might add) but she refused that too. So then I thought maybe it's the formula and tried rice cereal with Similac, still no luck. Then lastly I tried a bottle of Similac alone and still no success.

Has anyone been through this? I don't know if I should try Similac or Enfamil or another brand. I don't know if I should try to just give her bottles of breastmilk to get her used to taking them from me. I don't know what to do!!! Any suggestions?

I posted this on the 6-12 month board too but I thought y'all might be able to help:)

  • Have you tried some different brands of bottles? She may not like the bottle itself.

Try some different bottles, and BM only if you can. Get her warmed up to the bottle before you try to introduce the formula.

  • I've only tried one type of bottle, I'll go get some different kinds tomorrow.

    Thanks!

  • I swear by playtex drop ins.  My dd refused the bottle for weeks and then we tried that.  It took a few tries but eventually she liked it.

I would recommend having dh give her bottles (when he can) you should be out of the room or even the house.  I agree with pp that you should get her on the bottle by using breast milk first.

    Good Luck!

  • We had to switch DD over at 9 months due to supply dipping and DD not gaining weight. She refused even BM in a bottle after we tried formula. We eventually had to syringe feed her a couple times, and then she ended up drinking it out of a bottle. We did have to switch bottles too. Good luck!
  • Wow, syringe feed! That must've been really hard! Well I got a Playtex drop in bottle today so I'm going to be trying it out. Wish me luckSmile
