No Bowel Movement, Newborn

Hello,

My son is four days old and he has gone 24 without a bowel movement. He has only fed about 4 or 5 times since my milk came in yesterday. Anyone have any suggestions whether this is something to be concerned about or if it's normal? (He pooped fine while we were at the hospital.) Thanks!

  • Same thing happened to us. DS was jaundiced, and he went a day or two without pooping, so we took him to ped, who said to give him a suppository (a quarter of a glycerin thing you can get at any drugstore). Is he wetting a lot? If he's not wetting 6-8 cloth or 4-6 disposable diapers a day, you might have supply issues or need to feed him more often (try feeding more often before assuming you have supply issues).

After we used the suppository on him, he started going regularly. A breastfed baby should have at least 1 poopy diaper a day until 6-8 weeks, and then if he goes a day or two without pooping, that's normal.

  • DD is also jaundiced and the same thing happened to us.  We took her in to the hosp. and they said that most likely she wasn't getting enough breast milk from me to make her go.  Then I started pumping and supplementing her feedings with formula and it helped alot.  My milk came in 2 days ago, so now we're strictly on breastmilk.  Now she poops after almost every feeding.

My pedi said that rule of thumb is that the baby should have 1 poopy diaper for every day they are born by the time they are 4 days old.  I know some docs have different opinions though.  If he doesn't go by tomorrow morning I would call.
