Not your typical car seat question...

My four year old thinks it's really funny to take the seat belt off his booster seat, while we are driving or after he gets buckeled in and we are getting ourselves in the car. DH has actually had to sit next to DS a couple of times to keep him in his seat. DH is attempting to have the guys at work make some kind of clip to go over the buckle so DS can't get out of his seat. We found a couple of options on line, but has anyone seen anything locally or know of something that the kid won't be able to undo himself??? I hope this is just a stage he is going through.

Re: Not your typical car seat question...

  • those clips and altering the seat belts are NOT safe. Not in the slightest.

My advice? Put him back in a harness until he gets it. Four is right on the minimum age of the booster anyways. He's safer in a harness, and even more so until he learns to not unbuckle himself.

edit: i should add that I am a certified child passenger safety tech.

  • I agree that altering the seatbelt is not safe. What if there was an accident and whoever was helping DS out couldn't figure out how to get the seatbelt undone?

At this age, if he can undo the seatbelt, he can probably undo the 5pt harness, so putting him back in a harness probably isn't going to work either.

The best thing is to teach him that it is not safe to undo your seatbelt while in the car. It really sucks to pull the car over and rebuckle him on every trip (or multiple times on every trip!), but eventually he will learn. I hope it is a short phase and he learns quickly.

this is completely false. The force required on most harness buckles is higher than that required on a seat belt buckle (especially if the seat belt has been used a lot).

  • I must have a super strong kid then because my 8 yr old could undo his carseat harness when he was that age.

  • Thanks!

DH actually had his work make something to go over the seat beat buckle, so you need to put your key in to unlock it. I'm not even sure I would be able to open it and that is why I was wondering about it. DS is to heavy to  use hsi booster with the harness, so we may have to look at getting him a different seat. He understands he is suppose to be buckled. He is unbuckling himself when he is throwing a fit to go back to my mom' s house. (Currently, that seems to be the only place he wants to be.)

  • My 3.5 year old unbuckled his 5 point harness (nautilus) while we were driving once and I freaked out (probably more than I should have). It scared the crap out of me, and DS knew it. I pulled over and re-buckled him up. I then told him that he is NOT allowed to touch his belt.

It seemed to work. He hasn't done it since.
