GD-WDYT, is it cheating?

Is it cheating if you eat something "bad" but don't get a bad blood sugar result afterwards?

I've seen a couple of posts on 3d tri from newly diagnosed moms with GD, talking about how they're forbidden to eat any sweets, pasta, etc.  My nutritionist gave me some tips on what types of foods people commonly struggle with, but I've approached this diet as a "trial and error" situation (in moderation, of course) and never got the impression that certain foods were totally off limits.  I discovered I can eat ice cream pretty much every night, and as long as I keep eat most things in moderation I've been pretty successful overall.  Am I approaching this all wrong, or am I just lucky?

  • imo you are approaching it right. my dr. didn't forbid me from eating anything just showed me info on the gd diet and told me to eat high carb foods in moderation.

  • if your numbers don't spike then I think it's fine.

If it were me the only thing I'd wonder is if my blood sugar was spiking at night and then returning to normal by morning for my fasting.  So I'd test after the snack to see and if it was fine then I'd keep doing it.

Ditto, I completely agree with this.  To me, this is like a freaking science experiment.  What is good for some is bad sometimes for me and vice versa.  You just have to figure out what the problem is and go from there.  I still have chocolate in moderation - in granola bars or 100 calorie packs.  It works for me, so I stick with it.

  • I'm newly diagnosed with GD and my registered dietician told me to completely cut out fruit juices. They were a big no no. Other than that, there really isn't any other no no foods.
  • I wasn't forbidden anything either (except juice), but I did learn the hard way that sweets are off limits for me.  I'm not sure if it has changed in the 5 weeks it has been since I tried it, but I'm not taking the chance now that I have 16 days until my c-section.  It sucks though...I miss sugar.
  • I agree with some of the other ladies - it is not cheating - it is just finding out what works for you.
  • Definitely not cheating.  My doc told me that I can have anything in moderation, but I need to be really careful about what I put into my body.  But he also told me that if I want some cake, to eat some, because you can't always strive to have the perfect numbers.  You'll make yourself crazy!  Which is totally true.  I tried to stick to the diet like glue for the first week and I ended up crying at the grocery store looking at the ice cream selection.  :)
