question about post-delivery

I read when people say the "delivered the placenta" but I don't really know what that means! Can you explain that process?

Do you push, how long after baby, can their be complications with this, etc. Just curious! Thanks!!

Re: question about post-delivery

  • Yes, you do push but not as hard, plus it's a really smooth flexible mass so it kind of just slides out of you. In my case, the dr. kind of massaged my belly to get the placenta to gently detach from the uterine wall, and then I think kind of pulled on the cord to help bring it out. I think it came out maybe about 10 minutes after baby. But at that point, it's all kind of a blur, our son was on my chest for a while, DH was making phone calls to family, DS then got weighed...it's like there's so much happy stuff going on that the placenta part really doesn't feel like much of anything.

As far as complications, I guess there can always be some excessive bleeding, or in rare cases the placenta will not detach...but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • I don't even remember if I had to push.  The Dr. kind of massaged it out...it pretty much just slides right out.

  • It seems like it was between 10 and 15 minutes after DS was born. I didn't pay much attention to what was happening until the midwife asked me to give her one small push, and out it came. It's a pretty easy process. There can be complications, I remember from the books, but I can't remember what they are now. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
  • ( i'm late here )

I didnt even feel my placenta come out

  • Yes you do push, though you do not feel it coming out, I think because the baby is bigger than the placenta.  The Dr. just pulls it out by the cord.  I was induced on pitocin, so they kept that running after she was born & it helps to contract the uterus so they don't have to do all the uterine massaging , which I hear is painful!
