I'm still nursing DD, and we just started TTC again after I (finally) got my first postpartum period last month. Now I'm in the 2ww for cycle #2, and was idly browsing for info on nursing while pregnant, when I came across this article:
Twinning in general and identical twinning in particular are more likely
to occur in mothers who are lactating at the time of conception.
Latest studies by Dr. Gary Steinman indicate a much higher rate of twin births to lactating mothers: 12.4% versus 1.1% in the non-lactating population. Dr. Steinman analyzed the effects of breastfeeding on twinning frequency in cases of pregnancies conceived during lactation. La Leche League participated in collecting data on mothers who experienced fertility while breast feeding and became pregnant.
Two key factors influencing identical twinning include ovulation induction and calcium channel blockers. In his research, Dr. Steinmann concluded that increased twinning is due to both temporary overshoot of FSH with recent resumption of menstruation and also to the significantly lower serum calcium levels in lactating women.
Obviously that's just one study, but 12.4% seems like such a huge jump! Especially for somebody who might already have other factors increasing their chances for multiples. I don't think I'd mind twins, but DH would be a bit alarmed by this statistic. ![]()
Re: Interesting info about TTC while BFing...
I have heard that, and I know someone who got pregnant with twins with BFing.
W (02/2009), N (08/2012), and C (04/2014)
The only person I know IRL that got pg while BFing had twins
She now has 3 boys under 2!
Scary--I may TTC while nursing but I totally don't want twins.
that makes sense to me if we're talking fraternal twinning, but i was always under the impression that identical twinning was a pretty constant stat of 3/1000 births worldwide, across all race/demographics.
if this is accurate about the mono-twinning, that is veeery interesting.
