I guess I don't understand...

I've read posts on other boards recently where people are upset their doctor mandates STD testing or they want to refuse the antibiotic ointment in their baby's eyes at birth.  The reasoning seems to be "I KNOW my husband and I have been faithful to each other so there is NO chance either of us has an STD."

I love my DH and I trust him but the only person you can ever know 100% is yourself and personally, I would never put the health of child at risk because I was naive enough to think it was physically impossible for my DH to have cheated.  Most women who are cheated on are genuinely shocked when they find out.  It's sad, but true and my LO's health is more important than my pride.  I won't pretend the possible is impossible.

Sorry, off my soapbox.  I just don't get people's reasoning.

    I may forgo the ointment in the eyes, simply because colostrum works just as well and is natural.  I don't mind being tested for STD's, because it doesn't hurt me or affect my baby negativly.  I think some people may be upset at the additional cost, I'm not sure...

    I agree with you 100%.  DH and I actually got into it a bit in front of the doctor about HIV testing at the very begining of my pregnancy.  Yes, we had both previously been tested, yes, the tests had been negative, but, I still wanted the piece of mind.

    I completely agree.  The doctor is looking out for the health of the baby, mandating means *everyone* will be tested.  It's not just an issue of faithfulness of your partner (it's possible s/he could have acquired an STD before you got together, and STD testing is not mandatory in most states for a marriage license).  Even if it was an issue of faith, though, if you have total faith, the test will just come back negative as you expect.

    I didn't get the STD testing because a) I know where my hubby is 24/7 (he works from home, and doesn't go "out with the guys"...he says he would rather spend time with meBig Smile) and b) my insurance doesn't cover it, and the tests that they do are like $300 total...I agree, though, about the ointment in the eyes. I know that colostrum will work too, but I trust the medical staff to do it right, and I don't trust myself to be able to! lol

    I hear where you are coming from!  If I didn't have a doula that I trust completly who has a ton of experience, I'd never do something like this on my own...

    State of NJ required the STD testing and HIV test (once at the begining around 8 weeks and once around 30 weeks).  I was told by my dr's I couldn't refuse, nor would I.  It's just piece of mind, knowing everything comes out ok.  Its for the childs welfare afterall.

    My LO's health is more important than anything else! I agree. Although I was never offered STD testing. (Must not me madatory in MN) I also trust the doctors and hospital staff. There is a reason they put certain policies into effect.

    I was told that in California, the eye ointment isn't optional, it's law now.

    Mmmmmhmmmmm.  Plus you can have an STD for years and not know it.  Some only show up when there is an active breakout and sometimes that won't happen until your body is in an extreme situation like pregnancy.  I'd hate to have a blind child because STD testing was too much to deal with.  Plus every year they ask me if I want it at my annual pap and I say why not?  What does it hurt?  Nothing.

    I agree. Plus the testing is mandated now for a reason. Unfortunately, this is an issue right now. A little extra blood is the least of my worries. I have no problem with getting it done. As far as the eye ointment, it's not just for STDs. There are other bacterias that it protects from. I just don't see the big fuss. It seems like most other moms agree with this too.
