Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Bf'ers who had to stop eating dairy.....

What were your baby's symptoms?  How did you know that the dairy was a problem?  How old was your baby?

For the last 5 days, my baby starts crying at around 5:30 pm and is completely inconsolable for the rest of the evening.  She also won't take a feeding during that time.  I usually just put her to bed after hours of trying to comfort her and get her to eat.  When she wakes up again, she's a normal sweet smiling baby that eats well.  Also, last night she had diarrhea for the first time.  Soooo, I'm wondering if this could be a problem with my milk?  I'm calling the pedi in 10 minutes when they open.  Just wanted to see what y'all thought!

  • When I quit dairy in November, I got my sweet baby back - instead of the crying colicky gassy baby I had been trying in vain to comfort. Something about cow dairy that passed through my milk really wrecked him.

    He's a sensitive one.

Now if we could just figure out the eczema.

  • It could be.  What have you been eating for lunch?  DS has a soy protein intolerance that we figured out b/c he was fussiest (inconsolable) one evening after I had 2 soy burgers for lunch that day.  His overall symptoms were mostly GI -- loose, green stools, some stringy mucous and some flecks of blood in it.  On the worst days he was also screaming and crying in the evenings, refusing to nurse, and would just fall asleep exhausted in my arms.  He was also very gassy and had a lot of pain when passing gas.

Pedi said that dairy and soy intolerances frequently show up around 3 months.  I cut out soy immediately and we saw a huge improvement in about 2-3 days.  He was suddenly happy, smiling, and not gassy at all.  His stools are getting better but still not 100% better.  The pedi said it takes at least 2 weeks for the lining of the intestines to regenerate and that some kids never get their perfect stools back.  However, she said stopping the pain is the main goal and that if he's comfortable and gaining well, no problems with the runny and/or green poop.

    Good luck!

  • DS had diarrhea (sp?) and there was blood in his stool.  His was what the pedi called an "extreme reaction," but she said the allergy could manifest itself in a variety of different ways (colicky behavior, diarrhea, blood in stool, skin rash, etc.).

  • DD started with a lot of projectile vomit and then I noticed streaks of blood in her poop.  She was also really gassy.  I believe it started around 6 weeks.

  • My 4 year old DD had a milk allergy.  Her only symptom was a rash on her face.  My pediatrician had me on an elimination diet, so I cut out all eggs, peanuts, wheat, dairy, and soy, and then added them back in one by one.  We got the official diagnosis when she was about 6 months old when our pediatrician sent us to an allergist.  She was allergic to peanuts, eggs, and dairy.

The good news is that when she turned 3, we had her retested and she was only allergic to peanuts.  My allergist said that most of the time, children will outgrow egg and diary allergies.
