3rd Trimester

what will we need to take care of LO after a circumcision?

sorry for all the questions today...but i was wondering what we should have/ need to have at home to take care of the little mans manhood after circumcision? I know your supposed to take care of it with every diaper change...but what supplies do I need?  Do I need to take these things to the hospital for when we change his diaper in the room or will they supply everything we need?

btw......will I be around when this is being done? Do they scream and cry? I cant imagine getting their little penis cut on that young? Is it awful for them?

Re: what will we need to take care of LO after a circumcision?

  • We were told to keep vaseline on our son's package after his circumcision.  The hospital provided some and I don't recall if we needed anymore after that ran out.  I was not around when they did the surgery.  Not sure if my hubby was either.  I don't think it bothered him to much afterwards....he's never complained to me about it!  LOL.

  • I have the same questions about taking care of the area after the procedure is done.

FYI, you should have the choice as to whether your DS is given anethesia for the procedure. I'm sure it doesn't feel great but he won't remember it. Also there are two different ways they do the procedure. You should check into which way your OB/Ped performs it.

  • I don't know what you need to take care of it. But I work in a hospital and often times had to track down babies to do labwork. At my hospital, they have a treatment room in the nursery where they do the procedure. It's really quick, actually. This is the same room they do the hearing test in. So it will be out of the room. However, if you or your DH want to watch, I have seen people watch the dr before. Something I couldn't watch!

  • Sterile gauze pads and vaseline. They sent us home with lots of little tubes of it but we did buy a few more pads. We already don't need to do it anymore and our pedi told us he tells the daddy's to decide when to stop lol.

They gave him a numbing shot in that area and we were not allowed to be present. He was definitely very fussy that night and wanted to do nothing but be cuddled and loved on which was fine by me since I felt horrible doing it to him (the procedure itself I mean). Later on he did get baby tylenol to help ease his discomfort.

  • You need a tube of vasoline, but the hospital provided this.  I think you can choose to watch or not watch the procedure.  It worked out that I was in the shower when DS had this done, so I didn't see it.  I guess he cried for a minute or two, but was fine after that.

Thanks for the info I didnt know there were 2 different ways.....what type of anethesia do they use, just like a local?

  • The hospital will give you stuff to take care of it.  They usually have you use cotton pads and the ointment.  We ended up not using the cotton pads and just putting tons of the ointment on DS' little "junk."  The cotton pads would stick to him sometimes and I think that made it more painful to him.

Oh and we were NOT around when the doctor performed the procedure.  He didn't really cry afterwards (when they brought him back to us anyway).

    Good luck!

  • At my last appt, I talked about the procedure with my doc.  The procedure at my hospital - all circs are done at 4am with a penile block anesthetic & residents do all the routine ones.  It's also covered by my insurance.

Not 100% certain about after-care, though.  The hospital *should* provide you with everything you need while you're there & I was planning on just asking the nurse & following her advice.

  • Check with your hospital because I was surprised to find out that up until a couple years ago ours did not use any sort of block on LO for the procedure! Can you believe that?!!  They assured me that now it is common practice and the babies only cry because they're cold and their legs are strapped down.  DH has no desire to watch or have anything to do with the healing process (he wants it done but doesn't want to see it until it's healed)

  • Ditto the vaseline and gause.  The hospitial provided it, but I think we went out and got more after a couple of days b/c they gave us vaseline in a tube like toothpaste that was easier to use than the tubs of vaseline we already had.  I didn't go watch, I used the alone time to shower I think.

He seemed fine by the time he came back but I have to admit he seemed to cry pretty hard a diaper changes for a day or two after that.

  • All we did was put vaseline on his diaper in the front (for about a week or so)so it didn't stick to the wound....they gave us tons of it...he's 2.5 now and we still have leftover tubes, lol!
  • We were not there for the procedure with DS.  The hospital will provide vaseline, but you may want to have extra at home.  We were told to put vaseline on the area at every diaper change.  It looks awful at first, but was fine after 2 days.

What they didn't tell us (and I wish they had), is that once it's healed you should gently pull back on the foreskin at every single diaper change.  This will prevent any penile adhesions from forming (and it also helps to do this after baths).  Adhesions typically form the first year of life, so I would do this for the entire first year. DS had to have one retracted by the pedi, and he then told us we should be doing this. :(  The hospital never said anything, and I know many on here have gone through the same thing.

From what I've read, they give them a local anesthetic and if they are older then 2-3 months they give them a general anesthetic.

  • The hospital sent us home with a tube of A&D ointment and gauze pads. We put the A&D on the gauze, the gauze on the weenie and it kept it from sticking to the diaper and healed really fast. They sent us home with more than enough supplies to last us until he was healed. I would imagine most hospitals do the same.

My midwife said some insurance companies won't cover it at the hospital but they will cover it at the doctors office before the LO is a week old. Call your pedi to see if they do it then call the insurance company to see if they cover it as an office visit. All you have to pay for if it is covered is the copay.
  • the hospital gave us A+D ointment which seemed to help.

i was not around for the circumcision and my doctor who did it said the worst part for the babies is being strapped down, otherwise they use a topical analgesic and they don't feel anything painful.  in my practice 2 of the docs will do it right in the delivery room and the other 2 do it the next day. (thankfully it was next day for us!)

Ours was the opposite - they only covered his circumcision if it was done at the hospital - which it was. They used a local anesthesia, and he didn't cry at all. I wouldn't buy anything until after the birth. Some hospitals will give you everything you need - we were just told to apply vaseline at every diaper change - no gauze was needed. So, if you are worried about being prepared then I would maybe just buy a tube of vaseline (the squeeze tubes work best) - skip the gauze for now, your doctor may not tell you to use it.

  • It's pretty horrible insurance- it won't cover circumcision at all!  We have to pay something like $350 out-of-pocket just for the procedure and who knows how much else for anesthesia. Funny, I did have a friend whose insurance denied the claim since they named the baby after her husband and they thought the husband was the one getting the circumcision, not the baby!

  • Our pediatrician recommended polysporin (double-antibiotic ointment) to be used with each diaper change until the guide ring fell off.  Depending on the doctor that does the circumcision they may use the guide ring (I don't remember the real name), which snaps around the tip of the penis and is used as a guide for the Dr. during the procedure, then stays on to help the cut heal "correctly."  Other doctors do more a a free-form approach - still with excellent results, just a different style.

My DH and I were both present for the cicumcision (our choice).  We were all three taken to a small procedure room.  The Dr. verified patient ID, and parent IDs, we signed consent forms, then DS was strapped to a board with leg shaped cut-outs to old his body in place.  He still had his t-shirt on, and hat, so he wasn't too cold.  The Dr. gave him a pacifier dipped in sugar-water to suck on while he was given the local anesthisia (a few shots around the tip of the penis).  DS fussed a bit during this, but wasn't screaming.  DS continued to fuss during the procedure, which was quick, then was totally fine once he was unstrapped from the board and re-swaddled.
