2nd Trimester

what to bring when visiting...

our friends had their baby early via emergency c/s last night (she wasn't due until may 2, but baby and mom are okay) i would assume we will be going to visit them once they get home either late this week or early next week. my question: what should i bring to them? i'm not much of a cook, but i wanted to bring some sort of food. ladies, what have you done for friends or mom's what did you want after you got home from the hospital?

If you aren't much of a cook what about gift cards to local places that deliver?  That way they can pick what they want and have is brought to the house.

  • Gift card for takeout?  It's nice to have food delivered to you when you are having a rough day.
  • A big basket of her favorite snacks  or easy to eat things like muffins, granola bars, fruit, etc. Even with people bringing meals most of my food was consumed in bites here and there while holding/nursing/rocking baby the first few days.

  • Maybe you could text/call her or her DH and ask if there is anything she would like for you to bring her for lunch/supper etc. I'm sure she would really appreciate that!

  • I've heard the best thing to bring is def. food. Not cookies, cakes, or brownies but food that mom can eat, freeze and defrost.

Personally not a mom yet but I can honestly say that's something I would think is very helpful.

    This is right on target!

This, with menus to the places you get the GC too.

Also, if you are really close friends while you are visiting wash the dishes in her sink/empty & refill her dishwasher, toss in a load of laundry (even just the baby's stuff if you don't want to see their underwear), and tidy up a little bit, and offer to bring the new Mom whatever she needs (drink/food/etc.)

  • How about a rotissiere chicken, bread and salad fixings? Could be used for dinner or sandwiches.  Frozen lasagna or enchiladas that they can warm up for dinner.

Breakfast items might be welcome as well, something they can eat with 60 seconds of prep and one handed.

Your time.  Does the dog need a quick brushing? Can you hold the baby while mom takes a shower?  Wash some dishes? Run by the dry cleaners?

Exactly this.  There were no real meals at first.  Snacking was survival.

  • I sent my friend one of those edible arrangements (lots of fruit) and she loved it! If you are able to go there, maybe a nice basket with crackers, cheese, fruits, etc. Whatever she likes to eat. That was she can just grab a snack without having to cook or prepare anything.

This is how it was for me too - I lived off wheat thins, string cheese and dried mango in the beginning w/DD.

Ooh I wish someone would get me an edible fruit arrangement!

This is such a good idea.

  • If she's nursing a gift basket with easy to eat snacks some bottled waters and juices, and maybe a gift card for food would help a lot. Nursing moms have to stay hydrated and well nourished and they forget to take care of themselves so make sure you take care of her.

  • Frozen meals, your time and help in picking up the house or running errands for her, even you being there for a few hours while she takes a shower and a nap! My Mom bought us all kinds of frozen meals, sandwich fixings, snacks, and drinks, plus gave me all kinds of help with dishes and laundry (and my first real post-baby shower at home, all by myself, without having to put DS in a bouncy seat on the bathroom floor! LOL). If you know someone who can cook really well, offer them some cash to make a few meals for the family that can be frozen and re-heated.

I made a comfort basket for a friend that had an unexpected c-section, and I got her lounging clothes that wouldn't rub her incision, a big body pillow that she could wrap around her while sitting and feeding her LO, and all kinds of little gifts just for her. She still raves about it to this day, because everyone else got things just for the baby and I had the forethought to get her something nice for her recovery. You can even make her a cute coupon book for helping her with household chores Smile
