IF question...

if you went on clomid what options did you try first?

my dr is running some tests tommorrow. i have a history of problems so the  clomid is not out of the blue, but i'd want to see what my options are. obviously i'll talk to my dr and go through everything with him, but i wondered what you may have tried first.

Re: IF question...

  • We tried 6 months of Metformin alone (to control PCOS). That didn't work so we added Clomid. That worked on the 2nd cycle.

  • It was our first thing to try because I had LPD and the doctor really thought it was due to my eggs not being strong enough.

I did lose some weight before (I thought this could contribute to my wacky cycles since they used to be normal) and we had all of the normal tests done. HSG, SA, Blood work etc.

Clomid worked on the 2nd cycle with us using it.

  • Dr Faro and I were going to do several test to make sure I wasn't ovulating or that the ovulation was weak before I went on clomid.

So the first one was going to be HSG (?) where they check to see if the tubes iare blocked.  A lot of time, people get pregnant from this procedure.

The test after that in the same cycle would be the blood work (progesterone - P4) 7dpo (which i would tell her when I thought it did per charting, not per the 28 day menstrual calender).

If the HSG came back normal and the P4 showed poor or no ovulation, that was when I told her I would consider clomid.

Oh yeah...and she also suggested that DH did a sperm analysis to rule out issues on his side.

Forgot to add that I didn't do any of of the test above and got pregnant on metformin (2000mg) and a week on South beach.

the difference between neice and uncle...

dr s faro is having me do a postcoital test tomorrow with a ultrasound to check on my pcos. my cycles were regular until we started trying. my temp and sticks so far show no o. i'm out of metformin so i'll go back on that for a while before i do clomid.

he says if there are no eggs then he'd do clomid (mind you he's been dealing with my pcos and other issues).   my problem is he'd need to closely monitor me and we're moving. i hate starting over with a new dr who doesnt know my past issues.

he said he didn't think we'd need a sa since dh is addie's dad. he thinks problems with me are more likely then him.

You may want to do a SA anyway. I have heard of several couples who had no problem getting pregnant the first time, but struggled with male factor infertility the second time around. We are TTC #2 and I'm going to ask for DH to do a SA before I get Clomid.

Ditto this, for sure.  I had multiple m/cs before we sought treatment and my doc didn't do an SA because clearly DH could get me knocked up.  When we went to do an IUI (after a few med-only TI cycles) we learned that he has severe MFI.  We presume there was some "event" between my last m/c and the SA, but we're in the dark as to why his count plummeted.  Your DH is probably fine, but it's such an easy and cheap test - better safe than sorry.

  • My doc gave me a script for Clomid and said to use it after three months if we weren't pg (this was four months after our m/c.)

I had long and unpredictable cycles.

The best thing I did was lose 10% body fat.  It didn't translate to much on the scale since I was gaining muscle mass, but that fat loss totally transformed my cycles from 50+ days to predictable, regular 30 day cycles within two months.

good points. i think i'll ask for it before clomid, i'm over worried about the side effects. i'm nutty enough without added hormones.

  • I did a postcoital test when I was seeing a RE (hated her) and it was a waste of time.  She told me to do it on day 14 of my cycle (she kept on working on a 28 day cycle), and then when I got there and she drained my CM, she said my CM was abundant but there were no sperm!  She found only one sperm and it was dead.  I asked her what it meant...she said "nothing".  I had no idea why I even did it in the first place.  She gave me a prescription for clomid, but I didn't take it.

Metformin is actually the one thing that did make a difference.  I took 4 pills after dinner time and went from 40-60 days unpredictable cycles to 35-38 day cycles.

I had already had blood work and ultrasounds to check my PCOS before trying to conceive, and that's why I was put on metformin to see if that worked.  I went on it in November 2008..so we tried for several months and finally got a positive around April-May 2009.  It takes a perfectly healthy couple an average of 6 months to get pregnant...and so I figured that a year would be my limit prior to trying clomid as the last resort.

Have you looked into Femara at all?  It is similar to Clomid with less risk of high order multiples and fewer side effects.  Some docs won't use it since it isn't labelled as a fertility drug, but it can be a really good thing.

  • I had all the bloodwork and a HSG (actually 2 and a MRI, long story).  Dh had a SA..  We went strait to Clomid and tried 3 rounds (with trigger and TI).  I then realized my doc was a total moron and went to see a RE.  We then did 2 rounds of Metformin alone...  then added Femara.  The Metformin + Femara combo worked the first try.

  • We did clomid right off the bat after my m/c. After I m/c, my body decided that ovulation was strictly optional, and I was having 45+ day cycles. My OB tested my thyroid to make sure all was good there, gave me provera to start my period, and we went from there. We skipped the SA because I'd gotten pregnant right off the bat the first time -- our 5th cycle, and the first one we timed it exactly right. So it didn't seem like there was a problem on that end!

Yeah. Big fat surprise when we went to see the RE a year after the m/c and after 4 rounds of clomid and discovered that we had pretty severe MFI!

I ovulated every time with the clomid (albeit late; I tend to be a slow responder, even with my IVF)  and the one time we checked my P4 it was excellent, so I was getting good strong eggs. I also really didn't have too many side effects. A headache after ovulation, ovulation pain, some hot flashes... really it was pretty darn easy for me. Not everybody has the bad side effects.

I'd definitely say you want an SA, CD3 testing and maybe an HSG.

  • First time we did 2,000mg/day of Metformin

2nd time we did 2500mg/day of the slow release Metformin + Avandia

    Hope this helps!
