3rd Trimester

I just hate taking DHA

I am this close to giving them up altogether. I have tried 4 different kinds, including a brand from Whole Foods that is "fish oil free" (yeah right), Expecta, Target brand, Nordic Naturals. The fish burps are just horrible and last for hours. Even the Belly Bars give me fish burps!

Re: I just hate taking DHA

  • I tried a few different forms of DHA earlier in the pregnancy and they all made me vomit like crazy. I wanted to be able to take them so badly but my OB said not to worry about it, if you cant take it, it isnt the end of the world.

  • Have you tried taking them at night?  I used to have that same problem, but I haven't since I started taking my PNV and DHA pills at night.

  • I don't get them often, but when I do- look out!  It's the most disgusting thing!  I've heard that freezing them helps with fish burps, but I haven't felt the need to go there yet.

  • Hmmm. I should look in my cabinet. I take them and never once had a problem. I bought them on a whim too because it was BOGO.

  • I got a brand prescribed from my midwife that most definitely does not have fish oil in it as I don't consume animal products....so you may want to talk to your doctor.

And this!  I only seem to get them when I stay up late...

  • Try those candies made by Belly Bar. They have DHA in them and taste good. I think the actual Belly Bars have them too. That said, I have taken a few DHA pills in the sample prenatals that I got from my Dr and none of them were fishy at all. Maybe you can get prescription ones?

  • I take Nature Made Prenatal Vitamin, it has DHA in it. Maybe you can try it.

  • Barlean's Omega Swirl is awesome. Udo's also has a fish oil free DHA. These brands are also really good quality so your money will ACTUALLY be worth it. Look at your local health food store.

  • Given the current state of science concerning the impact that DHA will have on your child's brain development, I would definitely not quit taking them over fishy burps.  You're almost done anyway!!  The third trimester is when the brain development is really going crazy--this is an important time!
  • My doc gave me PreNexa (prescription PNVs) and I think the DHA in those is plant based. If you really want to keep up with the DHA then maybe talk to your doc/midwife about it. There are tons of different brands of PNVs so i'm sure there's something out there that would work for you.

  • Freeze them and take them at night not too long before bed.  It really does make a HUGE difference and NO FISH BURPS!
  • Ask your OB about taking them. I found out that DHA with fish oil can thin the blood like aspirin.  There is no warning on the bottles.  My OB told me not to take anything with Fish Oil because of the blood thinning issue.
  • Barleans makes acreamy lemon flavored liquid that actually tastes good and doesn't ever repeat. I also have tane the nordic naturals strawberry flavored ones which sometimes make me burp strawberry though:)
  • My OB said don't bother- if you have a well balanced diet you get more than enough.  Seeing as my diet has been less than well balanced over the past 8 months, I started buying regular food with omega 3 added (eggs, peanut butter, regular butter, all sorts of things).  If you don't want to take them, there are other options.
  • I take a vegetarian DHA too & have had no problems with it.  No prescription, I just get it from drugstore.com:

  • I can't believe I didn't know about the fish burps! I've been burping lately in the morning after I take my pills and it's tasted so gross but I couldn't pinpoint it! Now I know exactly what it is!!!!
  • It has helped me to buy the coated ones from Kroger (in the prenatal section) that taste like vanilla. I also take them right before bed so I don't notice the taste. If I take them during the day, I have fish burps all day long. Ick!
  • I like the CVS brand.  The DHA pill is like a small red jelly bean and has no smell -- unlike the all the other ones I tried first.

  • I take it right before bed.  Never notice them.  I used to take it inthe morning, but gave up on that fast!  I hated those burps.
