Question for Mom's of 15 mos olds....

How much does your child talk, not including jabbering?  My DD is 15 mos old and only really says the words mama and dada on occasion but she jabbers alot...i mentioned this to her doctor yesterday when i brough ther in for her checkup and shots.  Doc said he wanted her to go to early childhood and come back in 3 months so he can see how her speech is...I also have a DS who is 3 1/2 years old...I cant remember from when he was that little but their daycare provider recalls him not talking too much until he was a little older...Isnt 15 mos old still pretty young to be speaking too much??  I didnt make the appt to come back in 3 months and i didnt proceed with the early childhood referral yet.. I dont know but i think shes still little.  She does communicate in other ways and she jabbers  so i dont know if i should worry or if this is normal and doctor is overreacting?

  • Our pedi said receptive language was MUCH more important when we asked about it at DS's 18 month appt. DS doesn't say much even now, he has a couple of words, but he understands everything we say to him and finds plenty of ways to communicate. Pedi said not to worry till 2+.

I think your doc is totally overreacting.  I think DD at that age (not long ago) had that + 'ball'.

  • DD2 says mama, dah-eee (daddy) and the other day I think she said ball.  But she talks in her own language all the time!

  • Totally overreacting.  My DD is very similiar and we talked about this at her 15 month appointment.  Like the pp said, receptive language is much more important as well as her trying to communicate in other ways and make eye contact.  They just wanted to make sure she is making some progress- using more sounds etc.  Honestly, a speech eval at 15 months really wouldn't tell much.  I would hold off until she is at least 18 months and see if she has made progress.
  • I think he's totally overacting.  Our 17 month old mostly jabbers.  He can or will try to repeat just about any word you tell him, but otherwise he's just jabbering.
  • Klaire only had a bout 3 words at that point.  Now at 17 months she has maybe 6 she uses regularly but she "parrots" words we say.  I asked the pedi at her 15 month appt but he wasn't worried.  Give it a few months, I'm sure she will be fine.
  • My 15-month-old only has a couple words -- "dad" and "ball."  He just got tubes a week ago and since then his receptive language has improved dramatically and I imagine his vocabulary will be increasing soon as well.  I was a bit concerned before the tubes because he didn't seem to understand/comprehend/hear what we were saying to him either, but I'm not worried about his speech at all now.

I think your doc was jumping the gun a bit.

  • DS is only 13 months, but he does not say mama or dada.  He jabbers a lot, but he clearly understands when I say certain things to him.  He laughs, smiles, generally responses, runs away when I tell him I am coming.  My DD could say "Hi Tilghman"  at 11 months, so I was a bit worried.  Doctor said that understanding is far less important at his age than speech, and that as long as he is blabbling, then that was fine.
