Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

Gotta a question

Would you find it odd if someone gave you a ziplock bag full of their childs old pacifiers - for you to use with your new baby?

Maybe it is just me - I mean I know I can at times be the prissy, stuck up princess type and I don't have a problem with going to resale shops etc.... but I was somewhat taken aback by getting a bag of old pacifiers.

It is just me or would anyone feel this way as well?

Re: Gotta a question

  • I would definitely feel that way. I didn't even like it when SIL gave us old sippy cups her kids used. I just think that's kind of gross when the kid's mouth has been alllll over it.

  • Fine, then give them back to me!!  ;-)

Personally, I wouldn't use them.  You want one that she will like and she will suck it to the shape of her mouth, you don't want a used one!! Yuck!!

  • I wouldn't like it either. I'm grossed out on many things like that and everyone in my family thinks its weird. (old pacifiers, bottles, even a breast pump....) Sorry, thanks for the offer, but i'll buy my own!  I will go to consignment stores and have no issue with resale shops, but there are just some things that need to be bought first hand.

  • People are weird about different things.

I wouldn't EVER use someone else's kid's old paci ... but I put my kid in used shoes all the time and people think thats weird/oogy as well.  lol.

Don't let the bag hit you in the head when I throw it back at you!

Okay - I feel better.  Just wanted to make sure that I am not totally crazy yet!

  • Definitely not crazy (yet)! I wouldn't want used pacifiers, bottles or cups. Sure, you can sterilize and run through the dishwasher, but I'd pass.

  • I would not use them myself either but it's the thought that counts.  I'm sure it was meant to be helpful.
  • I would graciously say, "thank you" and then toss them when that person was not around.

Like others have said, everyone has their own "ick-factors."  Mine - no second hand paci's/sippies/bottles/blankets/bibs/sheets/certain toys/high chair/jumperoo.

However, I'm okay with second-hand clothes (not socks), shoes (I know - no socks but shoes are okay?  doesn't make sense....but I don't have to, it's MY thing), some toys, and I'm sure other things I can't think of right now.

  • No, that's a little weird.  I can handle hand-me-down clothes, toys, pjs, shoes.... but not bottles or pacifiers.

At some point, those things have to start smelling.  Ew.

  • Im all about hand me downs for DS (on most things) but the paci's not so much. Dont they have kind of a shelf life anyway? I always thought you are supposed to get rid of them after several months of use?
  • It is a little weird, but I've done it.  Embarrassed

When I bought the new 3 - 6 month pacis, my kids wanted NOTHING to do with them.  They used them each MAYBE 1 time and that was it.  I gave them to a friend.  Not sure if she used them but I would rather her have the option than just toss them!  I wouldn't be offended if she tossed them though.  The ones they used for 3 months definitely got tossed.

As for bottles, I have sold some at a garage sale (Dr. Browns).  I sold everything but the used nipples.  The lady that got them was SUPER excited.  I guess you never know what people will buy.

  • I am soooo OK with used bottles with new nipples!  New nipples makes it all good.  I would be fired up at your garage sale too! ha!  =)
  • Id say thanks, then toss.  Ewwwwww..
  • ewww, that's like offering someone a bag of old toothbrushes!
