Pregnant after 35

itchy hands and feet

My hands and feet itch so bad!  It just started a few days ago.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I read in my book that it could be a sign of a liver problem called cholestasis.  I have doctor on Wed. so we'll see what he says.

I have been having such itchy feet, that my husband suggested that I use athlete's foot medication on them.  Made no difference.  I also broke out in a rash last week, but associated it with new lotion.  But I will also bring it up to my doctor on Wed, for 16 week appt.   I did call my doctor last week, so he will know to follow up this week.  I suggest that you do the same.  Maybe it's something in Lake Michigan.....

    Love your bely pics!

  • There are 2 things that occur in pregnancy that it could be.  Cholestasis- which you mention- is very serious.  My friend had it and they ended up inducing her- it affects the liver and is dangerous.

The other thing it could be is PUPPS.  That is an allergic reaction to the DNA of the baby.  It's not harmful but it's really annoying.  I had PUPPS in my first pregnancy- did the itching start in stretch marks in your stomach and then move to your feet and hands?  That is commonly how it starts.  I ws put on steroid cream (much milder than steroid shots and it's ok to use when pregnant).  It drove me nuts from itching but it's not a problem for the baby.

Either way, definitely tell your doctor.  I hope it's just heat rash or something very minor!

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again

  • Believe it or not, I have no stretch marks or itching on the belly!  It's just on the hands and feet.  I will let you know on Wed.

    Thanks!!

  • actually it could be a third thing besides the cholestasis and PUPPS.

it could be completely normal part of your pregnancy.  i had it in second tri and my OB said its just part of pregnancy and its your body response to the growing and stretching its doing for accomodate your LO including all the extra fluid your body is making right now.

by the way you look GORGEOUS!  love the new pic.

  • My friend is 6 mo preg and has had this the entire time.  Driving her insane.  Nothing medical-related.. it's just part of her pregnancy.

She says that's the only thing making her miserable during this whole pregnancy.

  • This happened to me with DD around week 18 or so.  We were on a family vaca and I spent most of the time napping from taking Benadryl just to get some relief.  I felt obsessive/compulsive because I could literally rub my hands together/or rub my feet on the carpet endlessly because it felt so good.  After 1 week the itching went away but my hands and feet remained kind of splotchy wierd for another week.  It was assigned as 'one of those random things' that happens when pregnant.  Then a couple of weeks ago as I was approaching the same time frame with this pregnancy, lo and behold I had one week of outrageous allergy congestion/sneezing/headaches.  At first I thought it was the weather change with pollen count up etc but after a week it went away as quickly as it came and things continue to bloom.  I guess I am finding a strange 'allergy' pattern for myself around wk 18 of pregnancy - it's so odd but I am thankful it isn't prolonged like some of the other posts I have read.
