Pregnant after 35

Feeling like a huge jacka$$ re: risk of DS

So even though I'm 35, I opted out of all of the screenings, etc. for genetic abnormalities including Down's.  At my 20 week u/s, the tech was so reassuring about everything - she didn't see any of the "classic" signs for DS, etc.  So I hear I am thinking all is well...  Then I read this online:

"It is important to note that most fetuses with Down syndrome show no abnormalities on ultrasound. Often people are falsely reassured by a normal ultrasound because they believe it means that there are no problems with the baby. Unfortunately this is simply not true. Having a normal ultrasound is great and is somewhat reassuring, but it is not a guarantee that everything is perfect."

I don't remember my practice ever saying this - but I never asked either.  I feel like a moron.

  • Don't believe everything you read online, either.  What were you reasonings for opting out in the first place?  Because you would keep and love the baby irregardless of what the tests said?  Has that changed?  I doubt it.  You did what you chose was best for you, your family and your LO.  Don't let something you read online make you second guess that.

  • Nothing is 100%--I would think even Amnio and CVS have a degree of human error. Don't beat yourself up and simply enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Nothing is 100%...
  • Even though I am 39 we didn't do any kind of testing and delivered a perfectly healthy baby boy on March 9th.  Even with screenings there can be false positives.  I've read about that happening on here.  Hold on to the positive thoughts that you had prior to reading the info on the internet!!  I'm sure everything will be just fine!

  • The screenings are terrifying!  I just had mine come back last week showing that my baby has a 1:5 chance for DS and 1:65 for trisomy 18.

I had a week of pure hell waiting for my amnio results to come back that everything is fine.

The abnormality that did raise my risk was seen on the u/s.  (the nt measurement)

  • I agree with all the ladies, you shouldnt feel that way...,,Positive thoughts for positive results!!!
  • Please don't let it worry you.  The screenings are not 100% accurate anyway and I am sure you will love your beautiful baby no matter what!!

  • Sounds like everything is perfect so far with the baby to me. Things can go wrong...it's part of life. Things go perfectly right too, though. Don't stress over it too much and just enjoy the perfect ultrasound and relaxing pregnancy that you just had and are going to have.

  • You are not going to change a thing by worrying.  Stay positive and healthy and everything else will take care of itself.

  • Ditto what everyone else has already said.

I was 1:5 for DS and 1:65-ish for Tri18 as well and all of our U/S and the NT scan were perfect.  We opted out of amnio or CVS because, really, what difference would it make?  If we'd seen something on the 20w U/S to indicate a problem, I would have thought about amnio.  But everything was better than normal, so we skipped.  Our little boy is perfectly healthy.

At some point, you have to come to the understanding that a baby is not something that is completely predictable and guaranteed.  If that were the case, hospitals would have return policies!!

  • I know you're all right... I thought I would worry less with #2, but I think I worry more!  Thanks for the reality check!  Big Smile

  • I just went to the perinatal doctor.  He said, that only 15% of DS cases don't show on the u/s in one way or another.  Not most fetuses, only 15%.  Don't worry...
