Re: Do you have any tips on how you save some money?
First of all, how did you get 5 months maternity???
Lots of little things add up to savings. Bring lunch to work (don't buy). Cook dinner every night (don't eat out). Cut out cable/try to find ways to lower bills. Couponing. Find free family activities for the weekend for entertainment. Trade movies with friends rather than rent/on-demand them.
I agree lots of little things add up that we often don't think about.
- scrutinize every $ you spent for the past couple of months (or start going forward if it is impossible for you to create a spreadsheet to account for each $)
- go item by item ... phone (can you get it cheaper, will your current company off you a better deal) ... cable (do you need all of those premium channels - could you do netflix instead and cut the premium channels) ... how often you eat out .... how often DH eats out for lunch ....
- how much food do you throw out because it went bad before you ate it ... how well do you plan your weekly menu and grocery list ...
- review the fliers for your local stores to find the best deals and sales on the items you buy
- coupons (it's a big thing out there - tons of sites for printing coupons, going to manufacturer sites, blogs, etc)

We cut a lot of our routine monthly expenses (we had some double insurance coverage we dropped, we dropped some of our premium channels, we changed our phone to internet based, we set a budget for eating out, DH takes lunches a few days a week now).
I have also saved an average of 50 bucks a week off of our grocery bill just by seeking out the best prices and couponing.
I had to take baby steps to cut back so I could SAH and the first thing I did, and still do religiously, is plan out what we are eating for dinner for the whole week and make my list off of that. I bought a magnetic weekly calander that I put on the fridge that way if I am out and DH wants to make dinner, he knows exactly what to make. I also buy everything generic. There is almost no tast difference and the savings are huge! I used to spend $100+/week at the grocery store. I went last night and spent $45 and didn't use any coupons!
