Babies: 9 - 12 Months

*sigh* tell me I'm being ridiculous

Back when we were starting solids, I had this grand notion of making all his purees. Then he refused purees and so I gravitated towards BLW. But all along DS loved mashed up bananas (not a total puree but still with chunks in it).

Since he's been doing BLW, I decided to re-introduce purees to see if he would take to them now. And he loves them! So we do both (BLW and purees...not pure BLW but a combo of the two).

I think I've just lost my energy from breastfeeding and pumping these past 8 months because I have been buying store made baby food. I know purees aren't supposed to take a long time to make but I can't seem to find the time to do them. Thus, why we went with the store stuff. He loves it. But I feel guilty, like I should be making it myself. Please tell me I'm being ridiculous and that it's fine. Or you can share your secrets for finding time to puree food. :)

  • I started out making all of T's food and it just got to be too time consuming for me.  He'll be just fine on store bought food!

  • I buy organic baby food from the grocery store. I was making my own baby food at first but didn't have resources to buy organic fruits and vegetables. I figure the store bought stuff is much better for him than anything I can buy and make :)

  • I was determined to do all home made purees too but we started buying store bought food with meat b/c of LO's weight issues. I didn't want to try to puree meat to his liking.  He loves them and they are so easy. Don't feel guilty (although I have felt the same way at times). Do the best that you can. I do most of my purees on Sunday nights and he eats the same things for the week. I found that trying to have variety was time consuming. Also, he get's more Organic stuff in the jars than when I make it.
  • You are not being rediculous at all.  We do both.  If I have the time I make it and if I don't we use earths best or gerber.  As long as your baby is happy and healthy it really doesn't matter if you give him jar food.  Don't beat yourself up about it.  In a few months he won't want either one.  My DS likes table food the best so we do that when its something he can eat.

  • I wanted to do the same thing but I don't have time to shower let alone make purees so I buy organic jarred food.

  • Millions of babies eat jarred food and do fine, so you don't need to feel guilty about it. That being said, homemade stuff is really easy if you think ahead a wee bit and clear an hour or two from your schedule.

We buy DS's produce when we go grocery shopping, usually one or two things at a time (sweet potatoes and mangos for example, maybe squash and peas the next time). Then when we have a semi-free evening (usually a weekend) we get to business. I could do all of DS's food alone, but I have DH help me (well, he wants to help) and it goes by much faster. Most food can boil/steam/bake while we hang out with DS in the next room, and then we put him in his high chair with some Puffs while we puree/smash the cooked foods.

We usually start making a new food about halfway through the supply of the old one, that way he has a bit of variety without completely filling our freezer.

  • I've only had time to make the super fast and easy things like mashed up bananas and steamed apples. Everything else she gets from a jar and she loves it and she's happy. My mom started making her chicken "soup" in the blender and she gets that during the week. There's no way I would have time to make it for her myself.
  • Thanks ladies! I guess the lesson I need to remember is that it doesn't have to be all or nothing. I can use some jars of store bought food and puree some too.

  • I use store-bought purees, because I don't want to have to clean the grinder constantly!  With all the time it takes to cut up finger foods and prepare those, and make meals for DH and me, I think I'm doing plenty of cooking.  Plus, the store-bought purees are organic, so really can I do any better?

    This is what I do.

I bougth some jars to have variety and at the same time I do some purees. While I'm cooking dinner I just put veggies or fruit to steam and then blend them. I freeze them in this cubes https://www.babycubes.com/
