carter's sizing ? (again i know, sorry!)

i know that peeps have said the carter's stuff runs more true to size.  i'm looking at it on BRU and feeling conflicted though between nb and 0-3.  i *thought* i remembered people saying that they were able to get more usage out of the carters nb size than other brands but the weight they give on here says it fits from 5-8lbs?  and then 0-3 says 8-12lbs.

are we still talking only a few weeks of time in nb sizes for carters too?

  • Yep, maybe less depending.  DS could actually fit some carter's stuff until 3 weeks, but it was ridiculous by then.  He was 8 lbs 4 oz when he was born and barely lost any weight.  I'd pick up a small selection of NB clothes, honestly.  Maybe some gerber side snap shirts in 0-3 since they're cheap and really do fit a NB (and they still fit DS) and a few carter's outfits for going out and about/taking pictures in if you want.  But really, don't go overboard because you may end up regretting it.

  • My LO was born weighing 9 pounds and we were able to use Carter's NB sizes for 4 weeks (he was 12 pounds then).  0-3 swallowed him, so I think I'd go with the NB size.

  • Oh Geez, I've never even thought about it.  If you think baby will be large at all, I really would skip all NB stuff.  They might be a tad baggier at first, but not unwearable.  But it's true about Carters....we could used them for longer than most other brands, so you would have a better chance of their stuff working.  But watch out in the bigger sizes, they only list one number instead of a range.  I didn't think about it, and almost couldn't use some stuff.  The number is the upper age of when they think it will fit.  Gerber is the worst...I think my boys fit 0-3 month onesies for maybe a week or two.

  • go to walmart and get some faded glory organic NB sleep n plays for $5 a piece.  My daughter was in them until she was about 10lbs.  Then she moved moved to the 0-3 which still fit.  Don't spend alot on NB clothes but get some.

  • Yeah, even for Carter's, you're looking at no more than 6 weeks probably, with some smaller 0-3's worn concurrently.  But also know that people will want to buy you a lot of the smaller sizes, so you won't need to buy much of it yourself.

  • DD wore the nb stuff up until 5ish weeks.
  • probably just a few weeks to a month, but it is nice to have some things that really fit even if you can make do with 0-3. i have probably about 40/60 split between nb and 0-3 for baby girl. we got about a month and a half out of DS nb sizes once he came home. he was 7lb3oz when we came home from the hospital.

i love carters - they are so soft and the colors hold up so well with frequent washing :-) i will be sad when DS no longer fits in their stuff! i can't believe he is wearing some 18 month sized stuff already!

We actually ended up with the opposite... because so many people feel this way now, no one bought us NB stuff, very few gave us 0-3 and I have a ton of 3-6!

That said, Sophie is doing just fine in onesies and pants, sleepers, and a few cute outfits.  We've only left the house a couple of times.

  • Carter fit my DD better but she was only in NB for a day or two ok (maybe more like a week maybe two but not long at all), no matter what brand it was as she was 8lbs 9oz.  If you have a small baby it will fit longer  however they grow so fast that they don't stay in anything long.

She is now wearing anything from size 6 months to 12 months depending on what it is.  Pretty much the only thing that still fits her that is 6 months are her carter's onesies.  The problem is she is really long.  21" at birth and 26" at 4 months.

Keep in mind that you will most likely get lots of new clothes from ppl after she is born.

  • we only got 4 weeks out of Carters NB
  • I agree - I was really glad DS had NB sized stuff because he was swimming in most 0-3 (except gerber), but definitely don't go overboard. DS was 7lbs 11oz at birth and has been 50th-60th percentile for weight and between 50 and 95th for height/length and generally falls right on the mark with carters stuff even with his CDs. I've found that things like onesies generally are more forgiving in bigger sizes (e.g., DS can wear a 9 or 12 month onesie and they don't look ridiculous now) because most of the size difference is in the length. At the NB/0-3 size, the size difference is everywhere, so they're just swimming in something too big. sizes are crazy, though; DS is 6 months old, and today he's wearing a 3-month outfit, but had a 9-month sleeper on overnight that also fit perfectly.
  • DS didn't fit a single article of NB clothing, not even carters brand.  Honestly, I'd skip it and use 0-3.

  • K wore carter's NB until 2.5 months, I think. And she wasn't a small baby. But, she's consistently worn each size longer than the age range indicated. Right now, at 20 months, she's mostly wearing 9-12 month clothes. LOL

  • Anything NB with feet was out within a couple weeks - Max was born 21" and grew pretty quickly to 23", which puts him out of a lot of 0-3 stuff, too. He's lucky if his 3-6 stuff fits him sometimes thanks to diaper bulk.

  • My LO gained weight/height like crazy the first few months and he fit in Carter's NB for about 4 weeks, then he graduated to 3 mos where he stayed for a long time.  The brands with 0-3 (Carter's Just Like Me?) he was in for the shortest amount of time.
  • Lyte - Baby C is long and we don't have any NB stuff...all 0-3. It fits fine or needs just the arms rolled up once.

STAY AWAY from Gerber onesies - we were given 3 packs of 5 onesies and a bunch of hand-me-downs and none of the hand-me-downs fit so we're taking all of the packs back. Too short and don't fit over fluffy butts.

yep - gerber is bad. my little peanut has outgrown the length of gerber 24 month onesies with his cloth on!

just to give you an idea of the disparity,  his carters 12 month stuff fits perfect right now, though we make the 18 month work since i don't want to buy warm weather stuff too small to last all summer. gerber is crap - lol!

and yes i realized i have replied in this post 3 times....i am obsessed with the annoying sizing of clothing. i hate it in women's clothes, i hate it in children's clothes. i feel judged when things are just S, M, L but sizing is so inaccurate anyway. i feel that sizing at least for pants etc should be like men's clothes - in inches and concrete things like that!  but that is a rant for another day...

  • We use primarily Carters because of quality so that is my general experience with clothes.  NB fit my 8lber for 6 weeks.  Majority I had was 0-3 but if I wanted something to look appropriately sized I went with the NB.  DD didn't grow out of 0-3 months till she was maybe 6 months old.
