2nd Trimester

Anyone else had blood after vomiting? TMI

I woke up last night with a stomach ache and cramps, and ended up throwing up quite a bit. When I was done I started washing out my mouth in the sink and noticed when I would spit in the sink there was some blood in the mucous (sp). Also, there was a little blood when I blew my nose, which has been common for me throughout this pregnancy. I didn't see any blood in my vomit, but I was trying to not look at it. I haven't thrown up since I was 14 wks, but have been feeling more tired this week as well. When I woke up this morning, I felt better but my throat is really sore, so i'm wondering if I burst a blood vessel. Anyone else have something similar? TIA.

  • Yikes!  I'd definitely be calling the Dr. to ask.  Probably just a burst blood vessel but better safe than sorry!

  • I haven't had this experience. However, it is normal to have more sensitive mucosa since our blood volume is so much higher. Like bleeding gums from flossing; I am a regular flosser and haven't had bleeding gums for many years and now that I'm pregnant they almost always bleed a little. So I guess I'm saying that the acidity of your vomit could have disrupted several small blood vessels that were closer to the surface and bleed a little.

All of that violent puking tends to burst blood vessels. Not only do I see it when I blow my nose or hack up mucus, but I burst blood vessels around and in my eyes and around my mouth. Fun!

BUT, I've heard that barfy moms have brighter babies. I sure do hope there is a little truth to that, I'd hate for all of this suffering to be for nothing. LOL!

(Yeah I know, it's just an old wives tale. Just let me think it to make myself feel better. Lol!!)

  • Personally, no & I've had the nosebleeds constantly too! A friend of mine mentioned to me that she was having some gnarly m/s issues a few weeks back, and she noticed the same things you mentioned. She mentioned it to her OB and hers was nothing more than an irritated esophagus/throat from being violently sick for a few weeks at a time. I'd say it could be just from throwing up, or even your gums, and I'd mention it to your OB. Feel better!!

  • Normal for me, both during DS's pregnancy and this one.  I've always chalked it up to my esophogus/throat becoming raw from stomach acids/contents and bleeding as a result - my throat is usually sore for a day or two afterwards as well.   I'll also get that way if I have the stomach flu and am violently ill, so I wasn't worried when it happened during pregnancy.

Same here... My eyes would look like I was on drugs... Typically the morning puking had a lot more blood in it... Nighttime was better and less violent.

  • I puked like 2 weeks ago pretty good and I saw blood too...I think it was from all the straining. You will be ok. :)
