NBR: Anyone have an Eliptical or use one at the gym?

Do your feet go numb after a while? Mine have always done that at around the 20 min mark. It's annoying and uncomfortable!

  • Try not putting so much weight in your legs. Bounce more with the machine. Take the weight off your foot when it comes up like you would if you were running. You get more of a workout that way anyway.

  • I used to use the eliptical all the time.  My feet never went numb ....   that actually sounds really scary like you wouldn't have any control ...
  • Yup, it was my shoes. I finally went to a running store and got fitted for running shoes. I haven't had the problem since.

  • Try switching from forward to reverse from time to time. That helps.

It's weird! My friend's feet do the same!

Oh, maybe I should do this!

  • It was my shoes also. I went to a running store and they watched me run and determined I had the wrong shoes. I thought I would have to buy really expensive shoes to conteract the problem but i didn't have to.

  • Oh and p.s. you should also change you shoes out after so many miles. Even if you aren't a runner. Just try to look at how many miles you go on the eliptical

This is actually the incorrect way to use the machine.  You are supposed to keep your feet firmly planted and minimize bouncing as much as possible.  It will increase the toning effect of the workout.  As one of the trainers for a demo.

Bouncing, as the PP mentioned, gives your muscles a break and increases impact.

  • Agree with beaver. It will also do a number on your knees that you will regret in the future!

I guess it depends on what you're using it for. I'm not a runner and I use it for cardio. I'm not saying I'm bouncing off the walls or anything, but I do take the weight off my feet when they come up. It's more fluid. And I have to say I have a pretty toned a*s. Wink I also have a trainer here at work who trains us on how to use the machines correctly.
