SSH - Breastfeeding class is HORRIBLE - Save your $

The woman who taught it spent the whole time telling us WHY we should breastfeed.....not HOW.  She was borderline hostile when people asked about how/when to introduce a bottle so that they can pump when they go back to work.  She didn't give any advice on pumping - it was as if the concept was foreign to her. 

I've loved my childbirth class........i was really shocked and surprised with how horrible the breastfeeding class was.  I'd avoid this one and find it somewhere else.  I'm looking for a book now.  Total waste of $40.

    I am so sorry you had such a horrible experience.  The LC who runs the class at Good Sam is amazing.  They have a drop in Mommie Group (not BFing specific) that she runs and may be useful if you are in the area and stop in there she will gladly help answer your questions.

    I'm also happy to help if I can.  I BF my DD for 22 months until I got pg with #2.  I pumped from very early on because of latch problems I needed to fix and she went back and forth from breast to bottle from 1.5weeks on.  :)

    The one I went to when I was PG was horrible too.  I got chastised in the beginning when she went around the room asking people "what are your bf'ing plans"  every single person said "as long as possible" and I said honestly "I haven't decided if I"m even doing it yet, that's why I'm here".  I should have walked out when I saw the look on the instructor's face.

    They must rotate instructors.  I took it in Feb or March and had a great instructor - she also taught the Newborn Care & Safety Course (she was a doula, not a lactation consultant).  She was REALLY informative and really mellow - no pressure at all and was really positive.  I liked her a lot and used a lot of the info she taught when I had the baby.

    For those who had a crappy instructor, I also really liked the book "The Nursing Mother's Companion" (purple cover) - it's a good read if you are looking for a resource. 

    If you're delivering at South Shore, they have a really great group of Lactation Consultants.  I delivered in May and they had an LC come see me every day (without even needing to ask), they even sent one to show me how to use my Pump In Style Advanced and took care of all the paperwork w/my insurance so I just got to take it home brand new from the hospital.  Also, there's a free Lactation Support Group that meets every weekday from 1-2 at the hospital where tons of ladies bring their babies and there are at least 2 Lactation Consultants there so you can ask any questions and get one-on-one help with latch, etc. without needing a private appt (which requires a prescription or paying out of pocket if you don't have a prescription).

    I also like the support group because you weigh your baby before & after the feeding so you can see how much he/she ate during that feeding, and see how much they're growing.

    Don't get me started on the lady who taught the Childbirth class and the Infant Bathing & Massage class (the second one is offered in the maternity ward after you deliver).  SHE drove me crazy - we left both classes early just to escape her!
