Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Dh & I figure she's had 10oz of fluids today

I don't want to give her juice and water in high quantities isn't good either. Until she starts drinking more of the formula it would probably be a good idea to pick up some Pedialyte ya?

**8 of the 10 oz was bm from 4:30 and 8:30am before I went to the Dr. this morning. So she's only drank 2 oz of formula since 8:30am.**

  • I'm sorry to hear that..... Have you tried giving it to her with cereal?

    Yikes, that's not much.

I don't really know anything about pedialyte, can you call your dr. or a pharmacy about it?

With cereal and fruit. The fruit got 2oz down but that's it.

Pharmacy is closed and our Dr. doesn't have a night service. I'll call in the morning though for sure.

K, I just googled tips for getting a BF baby to take formula and saw this:

"Along the same vein, babies may be more likely to take a bottle if they are in an environment other than where they typically breast feed-the day care provider's home, or another room or chair. Once the baby tries and learns to accept the bottle in this unusual or different environment, he or she will probably be more likely to take a bottle in other circumstances as well."

Also, does your DD take a bottle otherwise? Like maybe she doesn't like the flow or something?

  • We had a stomach bug last month, we were told by pedi that they should be getting at least half of what they normally get, including, formula, pedialyte, ice pops.....so 10-12oz for a day or 2 is okay.

  • i would call the nurse line for sure.  that sounds bad.

Ya we tried that as well with no luck. But thank you for searching online for me, I appreciate the help! And no she doesn't take a bottle otherwise. We have tried a traditional sippy, straw sippy and bottle with the formula. She took a 1/2 oz from the bottle and then 1 1/2 oz from the straw sippy with fruit in it earlier today.

  • Oh no! I'm sorry I totally missed the OP. Pedialyte is really to restore loss of fluid and electolytes and to keep hydrated due to vomiting/diarrhea. If she has had fluids and isn't throwing up or had diarrhea, she doesn't really need pedialyte but it doesn't hurt. Poor girl :(

I'm not sure how else to get fluids into her other than pedialyte. If this goes on for another day then we'll end up back in the ER with her being the patient rather than me. And that would be worse!

  • This may be totally out there, but I've seen these supplemental nursing systems that attach to the breast. Could that work? I don't know where you get them.

ETA: Now I realized this probably won't work, since you don't want her to have your BM.

I think our clinic has a 24 hour service. Granted it's across the country but if your baby needs the help I can't imagine they'd turn you away from getting advice. Let me know if you want the #

  • did you guys try in the car? Seriously that is where L takes a bottle of formula best. It also has to be warm. Again I am so sorry you are going thru this. My doctor does nto want L having pedialyte at all, he says its no calories and babes need calories. Did you put formula in her cereal? Call the DR in the morning see if they have any suggestions for you.

If its just today then she should be ok as long as she's having wet diapers and if she cries, has tears. The pedialyte helps though. When DD had her 2 day stomach bug she wouldn't take any formula or solids without throwing up so my pedi had us not give her any formula for 24 hours and just do pedialyte. Is she sick? Sorry again missed the back story. You can also do 2oz of pedialyte mixed with 2oz of formula if she'll take it.
  • Be so careful! We ended up in the hospital for dehydration at 5 months. It was flu related but she wasn't drinking. They said based on her height and weight she needed at least 15oz a day min. Good luck.

I know she needs the calories but she also needs fluids. I gave her about 16oz of solids today so I'm not too worried about the calorie intake (plus about 8oz of bm). At this point I am worried about dehydration!!

  • I would be worried about dehydration throughout the night. Definitely make sure she's having wet diapers.

I have no advice, but I would probably give some Pedialyte.

No, I'm the one that's sick. I was in and out of the ER and Dr's office for the past three days with a SERIOUS case of hives. Like really really really really bad hives. I've had an IV, numerous shots and am now taking 10 pills a day to help stop them. Since I bf her she has to have formula until I stop taking all the medications. She has never had formula before today and hasn't had a bottle since early December. It isn't going so well.

I agree with this.  Any fluid she'll drink I'd give her just to avoid dehydration

This is exactly my thought. Dh just left a few minutes to pick up some Pedialyte at Target.

I'm sure she's fine.  Remember solids have water in them too, so she's getting something from them too.
