Boston Babies

neighborhoods in Boston?

Hi folks! My husband and I are possibly moving to Boston in a month and I'm just starting to research areas to live. I think to start out with we definitely want to live in Boston itself vs. the suburbs, and then once we know the areas better we'll choose a suburb to buy a home in.

I was wondering if you ladies could share your expertise on the different neighborhoods of Boston and what might be a good area for a young couple w/ a baby to live? My son is 5 months old now, and I'm currently a SAHM (not sure if I will start working again once we move). I'd love an area w/ lots of families/strollers and parks/playgrounds if possible. I think we could potentially go up to $3k a month for rent and are hoping for a 2bd/2bth in an elevator bldg w/ laundry in unit.

Please tell me if I'm out of my mind for hoping for that!

So far I've heard that Fenway/Back Bay would be good choices, and also South End. I've also heard that Brookline near Coolidge Corner is a good area to walk around.

My husband will be working in the financial district, near South Station.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

A

Re: neighborhoods in Boston?

  • Good luck with your move! Here are some neighborhood thoughts of mine ....

Beacon Hill - not good for strollers, mostly brownstones w/no elevators, but quaint with LOTS of familys, fun to walk around, close to everything including the Boston common, lots of little resturants and shaps. The appartments here are generally small.

Back Bay/Fenway - there are several professionally managed buildings in this area that would have elevators, and laundry in the building.  I don't know the names of many, but check out the Avalon buildings near the Prudential building. This is a nice location, probably a 15 minute walk to the common.

Coolidge Corner is a nice area to walk around, lots of shops, but it is not "in" the city.  It would take your husband some time to commute to South Station from there.

South End, is a nice neighborhood, several parks, shops and resturants.  I would say here and Beacon Hill you would be around the most families.

I just moved out of the city, but lived there for almost 8 years and moved around a lot! - so let me know if you have any questions!

  • Yah, I definitely agree with TK07, those are good areas.  The hard thing with living in the city is that families are less prevalent then the suburbs.  But I think those areas are definitely ones to check out.  Also, there are suburbs that are subway (T) accesible.. similar to being in the city, but just outside enough that it's very residential.  I live on the Malden/Medford line and we absolutely love it here.  We are a mile from the Malden T stop, but the area is very family focused.. and it's not Boston rent prices.  That is the direction we took, but I am also from MA so I have an idea of the areas.

You can check out the Subway map: https://mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/

and maybe look into areas that are on or close to the red line.  I don't know south Boston area well.. but when you look around at apartments etc. and if you find something in a particular area, definitely ask around or post here again..
