I'm in early intervention, so I'm extra paranoid. I know loss of speech is a huge red flag. He's 3 1/2. Lately he's been mixing in babbling with real speech. "I want a kdjfoei momma. I put this on the table then sndfsooin." I think he's just playing with his language, but don't know if other's have gone through this. I prompt him to use his words. I just don't want the babbling to become a habit. He's with a 2 year old all day, and I think they go back and forth with made up words. His brother who is 10 months is starting to babble more, which could be a factor. Anyone else go through this?
Re: son regressing in speech?
My daughter who uses words like ""Actually" and "Extraordinary" in her regular speech, does the made up word thing too. She does it more when she plays by herself, but also I think when she doesn't know a word or can't remember it at the time. Never even occurred to me to be worried. Her teachers tell me she is very advanced in her speech.
Mine has definitely been experimenting in babbling lately---not sure why. He was 3 in January and talks well for his age. I was in EI for 2 years and have worked with children with Autism for over 10 now....can you evaluate him yourself or have one of the evaluators do it? I know in GA that 3 is the cutoff but I'm sure you have a Speech Pathologist connection somewhere in your EI circle.
There are also some online things but I think they are for all 5 domains so that might not be specific enough....I know the the Ages and Stages is online and you submit and they email you back within a couple of days.

This. And, my almost 3.5 year old DD has an almost 1.5 year old sister who's babbling, so she babbles back at her.
can you try rhyming with him? so if he says 'it's on the table snoogin' can you make it funny and say 'snoogin loogin'? is he losing vocabulary -- forgetting the names of things he knows?
My DD (just turned 4) LOVES to make up crazy words. . . then we ask her what they mean and she makes up a definition. Her friend across the street who is about 15 months older went through that phase, too.
DD is another one that makes up words and babbles sometimes. She is also very advanced in her speech. I think having a 20 month old brother has something to do with it. I laugh at DS or say, "Oh yeah?" to DS so I think she is doing it for attention.
Like pp, she also makes up definitions to the babble!
