Is a glider a 'necessity' for LO's nursery?

Re: Is a glider a 'necessity' for LO's nursery?

  • I didn't vote because you said you wanted to hear from second time moms, but I'm already glad I got one.  I tried sitting up against the headboard of my bed with pillows, and that is not at all comfortable.  We don't have the best curtains in the rest of the house, so sitting on the couch is not an option (Unless I buy tons of curtains).

My neighbor was about to list her glider on craigslist, so I bought it off her for $50, in great shape.  If the issue is money, used is a great way to go.

  • We do not have a glider but do have an upholstered rocker in DS's room.  We still use it everyday and I would highly recommend some type of glider/rocker in your nursery.  Babies are soothed by the motion of moving back and forth (read Happiest Baby on the Block) and you will appreciate having something to sit in when you are up in the middle of the night:)
  • I think they're ugly.  I didn't get one before DD was born.

Then we were in the hospital and DD was fussy and DH rocked her in the glider and like magic she got quiet.  DH was on Craigslist that same day finding me a glider.  We recovered the cushions and it's as good as new at a great price.

So, I think you need one.

  • We have a glider and we still use it everyday also. I would definitely recommend getting something.

  • We had a hand-me-down rocking chair that MIL gave me. She even gave me extra thick cushions for it for my birthday. It certainly served its purpose on many a sleepless night. A glider would have been much more comfortable, but our rocking chair was fine and it was free.

  • If you're not getting a glider definately get a rocking chair. I think having something to rock LO in is a MUST!

DH and I didn't get anything with DD before she was born (late July). MIL bought me a glider for my birthday in Sept. I couldn't thank her enough. DD loved to be rocked and she was a big baby, 8.5lbs and 13lbs by 2 months. My back started aching from "rocking" her while sitting on the bed or couch.

  • We bought a really nice one, and It just doesn't feel like we've gotten our money's worth out of it.  It's in ds's room though, and not in the living room, so when we feed him, we don't usually do it in there.  I'll probably get more use out of it with dd, especially if I need a comfy spot to feed her, post childbirth.

  • Thanks for all the feedback! I think we may try to find a secondhand glider on Craigslist and just recover the cushions. The gliders at BRU are around $300 which is more than we are willing to pay at this point .
  • We got the Monte Design Luca Glider and Ottoman. It's all eco friendly manufacturing plus it's a really modern style so it looks great with the rest of our home decor.  not too nursery like.
  • We don't have a glider, but have an upholstered chair in his room that rocks.  I would say it is definitely necessary.  Rocking him was not only a great way to calm him down/put him to sleep, but I would never trade that time with him for anything.  I still rock him sometimes.  To me, nothing is sweeter.
