3rd Trimester

Those who failed glucose test

I failed my 1 hour test and am scheduled tomorrow to do my 3 hour. I'm just wondering what others did to lower their levels for the rest of their pregnancy?

Re: Those who failed glucose test

  • I failed my 1 hour and passed my 3 hour. I didn't do anything different. It is very common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. I'm sure you will be fine too! Good luck.

  • I failed my glucose by 1 stinking point, so in the week between I ate fewer carbs with each meal and passed the 3 hour fine.  Many, many women fail the 1 hr, so don't fret too much over it.  GL!

  • Over 85% of people that fail the 1 hour go on to pass the 3 hour.

    GL!

  • I failed both my 1 hour and my 3 hour glucose test. I had to meet with a registered dietician. I had to make minor changes to my diet (no coke, fruit juice or candy), measure my blood sugar 4 times a day and exercise. I thought it would be a lot worse. Good luck on the 3 hour test. Bring a book, magazine or an iPod to keep you busy.
  • I failed my first and have my 3 hour tomorrow too. Not looking forward to it. Good luck to both of us!

I did not have it with my first (passed the first one then). I have 2 friends who did have GD, so they gave me advice. They said if I fail this one, I'll have an appointment with a dietician to go over what to eat the rest of the pregnancy. Depending on how bad your numbers were, you might have to prick your finger several times a day. You also keep track of everything you eat. Everything is measured - how many ounces of this and that to eat/drink. It's actually very healthy. No sugars, fruit juices and white flour. Lots of whole wheat and veggies.

  • many people go on to pass the 3 hour after failing the 1hour.

i however did not. i found out this weekend that i failed.  my ob today said he'd be setting me up with the diabetes care center in my area which does the education/nutrition for GD.

good luck and ditto pp on bringing something to do. its a long time.  also bring something with protein for after you are done.  like a piece of cheese or something.  or peanut butter.  it helps get rid of the yucky sugar high/low feeling and balances out the sugar.  also drink lots of water after you are done.  during the test you are not allowed to eat or drink anything while you are there and no exercise.  all of which can change the results.

  • I have GD...there is nothign you can do if you have it to make your numbers pass because the solution they give you is designed to push your glucose levels. Doesn't matter what you eat the week before, if you have GD it's going to be there no matter what.

I brought a banana for after the 3 hour test, it was perfect.

Oh and it's really not THAT bad, once you get used to pricking your fingers each day and monitoring your diet. And the diet is really dependant on each individual, some people can have treats, some can't. Don't worry and GL!

  • I got a 167(135 being the limit) on my one hour, but passed the 3 hour.

If you have GD it's best to find out now, and change your diet and make things as healthy for LO as you can. Its more work and planning, but who wouldn't want to do what's best for our LOs?

  • Did your Dr. have you fast prior to the 1 hour test?  The lab that I went to said that they usually see people fail the 1 hour if they hadn't fasted prior to it.  A lot of doctors apparently don't have their patients fast for the 1 hour, only for the 3 hour so there are a lot of unnecessary failures...  My doctor told me to fast 12 hours prior, I had the test at 9am so no big deal.
