St. Joesph's

I'm from Lakeland and don't want to use my local hospital am I and considering St. Joe's, Tampa General, and Brandon Hospital.

We took a hospital tour at St. Joe's and I loved it. Then after going to my insurance co's website and compared hospitals I noticed that of the 3 St. Joe's ranked higher in complications, etc. Now I'm 2nd guessing. I've never talked to anyone that has experience with these hospitals...Pls help w/any advice you have. TIA!!!

Re: St. Joesph's

  • I have heard good things about both St. Joe's and Brandon Regional. I am delivering at Brandon regional, but mainly because it is so close to home. My co-worker who delivered at Brandon said they are wonderful and really attentive to her care. I don't really know anything about Tampa General though.

  • I'm not sure, but I think St. Joe's may have more complications because they take more high risk cases.  From what I understand, they have the highest level NICU in the area, so if complications are expected, that is normally where people go.  Just a thought?
  • I delivered at St. Joes just over 2 years ago and it was wonderful.  I think they may have higher numbers for complications because they probably have more patients and as the pp stated they are more likely to take on higher risk patients because of their excellent NICU.
  • st. jo's women's is a wonderful hospital. but very busy. uch, tampa gen and st. jo's all have a level 3 nicu. i think lakeland is level 2.

if you are not expecting any complications go with the hospital that is close by imo.

  • i delivered at brandon and had a horrible experience.  the nurses were rude and bitchy.  they forgot to start my iv when they admitted me and i almost had to forgo my planned epidural bc i wasn't on fluids long enough.  i was ready to push and told that even though my body was screaming at me to do so, i had to wait bc my dr was "busy in a c-section."  the baby nurse wheeled my baby into my room the next morning and never told me if he had eaten, pooped or been bathed yet.  when i called for the nursery they never got back to me so his feeding was an hour and a half over due.  (it would have been more if i didnt' take it upon myself to just feed him anyway)  the nurses couldn't be bothered to bring me anything i asked for (including pain meds) for a min. of 2 hours after i asked.  should i go on?  bc it doesn't end there.

i should add that this was not my first birth so i "do" have something to compare it with.

i've met quite a few med. professionals since going to BRH and they've directed me to st joes, or TGH.  our next child will be born at st joes.

  • Thanks michelle. I had surgery at Brandon earlier this year and had a horrible experience in the hospital. The surgery center was fine but the nurses in the hospital were awful. Sounds a lot like what you experienced. I was hoping that the women's part of the hospital is better but I won't take any chances now. I'll be at St. Joe's. THANKS!!!
  • I agree with the PPs - St Joe's has a higher complication rate because they're viewed by many as the "best" hospital to deliver at in Tampa, so people who need extra care go there. It's also the place where two of the biggest & best OB/GYN practices have their privileges, and many of their patients sought them out because of their special needs. Several of my friends delivered at St Joe's and had a great experience. My OB/GYN practice delivers only at University Community Hospital (by USF), and I would highly recommend them, too. For you coming from Lakeland, it might be quicker for you too, since it's on the east/north side of Tampa. I had a wonderful nurse who stayed on two extra hours to see me through the end of my labor, and she couldn't have been sweeter and more helpful. Once in recovery, the nurses checked on me often and brought me my pain pills every four hours like clockwork. As for Tampa General, I was always under the impression that their maternity ward focused on un-insured (read low income) deliveries. That said, they're supposed to be opening a new maternity wing sometime in 2008 that will be more comparable with the amenities offered at St Joe's and UCH. I'd check and see if it's open yet.
