Moving to Tampa

My DH and I are moving to Tampa in Apr.  Where would you recommend we live?  My DH will work at MacDill and I will work just south of the airport (on west cypress).  We have a 15 month old and he's going to be on the base daycare with my DH doing double daycare duty.

I hear traffic is bad, so I am nervous about living out in the Brandon area (hate long commutes), but we want to live somewhere safe too in a home that isn't a fixer-upper.

We are going to rent for at least 6 months until we finalize where we want to live, but even that is difficult since we have two labs!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  TIA!  :)

Re: Moving to Tampa

  • I'm not very familiar with west Tampa, but I think Westchase might be a good location for you guys.  The problem is that the other locations I would recommend, South Tampa, Westshore, and Town n' Country go from being nice to pretty bad in just a few blocks.  Traffic is going to be bad almost any where you move in Tampa, unfortunately.  We've had a build, build, build mentality that is finally catching up with us.  I definitely would not recommend Brandon, New Tampa, or Luzt (all nice places) if you don't like commuting. . .they would all be a pretty bad commute.  Good luck, though!

  • I lived in westchase for 2 years and my husband has a restaurant there.  It's very child friendly and very close to the vet expressway.
  • It's true about going from decent to bad in a matter of a few blocks in South Tampa....but being by the base would be easiest for you guys as far as commute.

Westchase is super nice and can be pricey...it all depends.

I would say no to brandon, riverview, new tampa, wesley chapel, lakeland, lutz, carrollwood.
