Florida Babies

childbirth classes

I want to deliver at St.Joe's. I live in Lakeland so I could attend a childbirth class in lakeland, brandon or tampa.

I'm having a hard time deciding and am a little confused. The prices vary from hospital to hospital from $0 at baptist hospital in plant city to $70 at St. Joe's. The classes all seem similar with some adding newborn care, medications available, etc.

This is my first baby and really have no idea what to expect. For those that have taken these classes before....what did you think and what would you do in this case?   TIA!

Re: childbirth classes

  • We took the classes at Tampa General and found them to be very helpful. Many people told us they would be a waste of time. We did not think so. We took childbirth, newborn care and breastfeeding classes.

As first time parents, I'm glad we took them. Some of the information went out the window since all pregnancies and babies are different, but it helped to know what to expect. DH went with me. Thank goodness for that because he helped me breastfeed since he took the class too.

I say go for it. Just find the classes and times that are best for you. If cost is an issue, go for the Baptist hospital. If not, I'd go where I would deliver. I say this only because our teacher gave us her card just in case we needed her when we were admitted.

  • I took the class at st joes in tampa and I thought it was a waste of money.
  • I also went to TGH and was not that impressed. It's not to say they weren't informative. It's just that I read so many books that I heard most of the info before. There were some things the books didn't have like how to wrap the baby in a "burrito." I would also recommend to anyone to take CPR. I am required to have it for work so I don't know what it is like at TGH.

If anything, take the free ones. The info shouldnt be all that different.

  • I'm a fellow Lakeland nestie.  I delivered at St. Joes and took their childbirth class.  If you're read up on things the class itself won't be much new information but the biggest benefit was doing a tour of the hospital.

I think the class at LRMC is around $5-15.  You may want to do the class at LRMC and then just pay for the tour of SJH, which is a lot cheaper than their class.
