Parenting after a Loss

another solids question

Thanks for all your answers! Here's another question. MIL has been buying DS jars of baby food for months (she gets them somewhere wholesale). All of them say Gerber 2nd foods. What's the difference between a 1st food and 2nd food. I was thinking of starting with squash or carrots, but both of them say 2nd food. I have no 1st food jars. Does this matter?

Re: another solids question

  • For Earth's Best, if it is the same food, the difference is usually the texture.  I don't know about Gerber.  Check the ingredients to see whether there is any extra stuff in the 2nd stage stuff.  I went straight to Stage 2 because it was cheaper per oz and DD has had no trouble with it.
  • Loading the player...
  • All it says is "Squash, water" "peas, water" "green beans, water". I looked it up on gerber's website and it says that once they've had single foods they can start with 2nd foods that are mixtures, but the only mixures I have are like cereal with applesauce or banana.

  • I think 2nd foods either mix two 1st foods, or in the case you're referring too the puree will be a little less thin and runny.

Ohhh ok..thanks! I make his cereal pretty thick now and he does just fine so I'm thinking he'll be okay. Now I just need to find something I have enough of to feed him a few days in a row!

  • Gerber sets up their food in "stages." So 1st foods are for "supported sitters" and are very liquidy purees. 2nd foods are for "independent sitters" and get a little chunkier. I think they recommend you go in order, but if you think he would do okay with the thicker food then go for it!

Also the 1st foods are only one type of fruit or veggie, but the 2nd foods start mixing fruit and veggie combos. So its generally better to start with the 1st foods to try out single fruits and veggies to make sure he doesn't have any allergies, because if he has a reaction to one with different combos then you won't know which fruit/veggie he had he reaction to.

That was kind of a ramble but I hope it makes sense?!

  • That does make sense. Maybe I'll have DH pick up some stage 1 foods when he's at the store tonight :)
