Philadelphia Babies

phillybride1206, re: Virtua classes

So we had our first Labor Basics class at Virtua last night.  Honestly, it was kind of boring.   DH (among other men in the room) almost passed out when it came time for the birth movie. It was literally the first time he'd ever seen one. LOL
It was good to hear the hospital's actual numbers though, % of women who get sent home for false labor, % of c-secs, % of inductions, etc. They passed around the suction device, forceps, stuff like that.
Next week's class is to focus on pain med options, c-secs and aftercare.
Like I said previously, I really wanted to take the class for DHs benefit.  He isn't familiar with any of these terms and procedures and I wanted to give him an idea of what to really expect. If I were taking it just for me, I think I'd be disappointed.

  • Do you have the induction and c-section % handy? this is also my hospital so I am very very interested in those. Thanks for your feedback!

  • Number that were sent home from triage for false or early labor was in the 30% range. The nurse said they tend to send home women who lived very close to progress at home rather than taking up a bed for a needless 24-36 hours. Makes sense. I hope to do most of my labor at home since we're right around the corner.

I don't remember the exact c-sec #s, but I remember that it was very high ( or higher than I imagined) for c-secs following inductions ( surprise, surprise LOL) and I believe it was around 15% for pre-scheduled.

Considering that they had almost 500 births for the month of June they seem reasonable numbers, I suppose.

  • I was realy hoping that the numbers were going to be lower. Yikes. I know a girl who just delivered there and she "had" to have a c-sec because her baby was "too big". She was only 7 lbs something. Ugh. I hope they aren't that type of hospital. I really want a natural childbirth. This scares me. :-(
  • It's a great movie, but I never shoud have watched The Business of Being Born. Now I am so paranoid.

  • GerrieandPaul -

I spoke with my ob/gyn about it because I really want to avoid a C-section too (I'm delivering at Virtua) and she said that it's really up to the dr, not the hospital.  So I would definitely talk to your dr. about their opinions on C-sections and the reasons they would do one.  Mine basically said that other than fetal distress, she'll let me keep trying as long as I can!

    good luck -

I guess I just question ethics after that movie. I will wonder  whether am I really in distress or is it because it's 5:00 on Friday and the doc wants to go home? I know it's wrong to question ethics, but it makes sense when statistics show that c-sections are highest on Fridays at 5:00 and at 10:00 at night. Ugh. Paranoid I am sure.

  • No, I hear ya.  It's a real concern.  I would just definitely make your views known to your OB - I think they have more control over it than Virtua does.

Who is your OB?  I go to Cherry Hill Gyn in Mt. Laurel.
  • I'm with the Women's group for OBGYN in Voorhees (right next to hopsital in the Pavillions). I LOVE them. I love my primary OB that's why I feel bad for questioning ethics.
  • Hi girls! I had DS at Virtua in Voorhees and they were amazing! I had a scheduled c-section (decision made my me, DH and my doctor) and was in the hospital for 4 days. The nurses were amazing and really helpful for a first-time mom! GL!!!
  • thanks for the info!  Did you take any of the classes at Virtua?  What did you think?
  • We took the 1-day birthing class and the Baby Basics class. The Birthing class was kind of boring but the info was good - Although I ended up having a c-sect, so a lot of it didn't apply to my situation. The baby basics was good because DH and I had no experience at all with babies. I kind of wish I had taken a BF class b/c at first DS wasn't latching on right b/c I didn't know what I was doing. But I was in the hosp. for 4 days and was able to meet with a few LC during my stay. They were great!!!
  • thanks so much!  We are signed up for the baby basics class in Oct because we have no idea what to do with a newborn.  Glad to hear it was helpful!

Still thinking on the BF class.  I may sign up for it last minute as my due date gets closer...
