wwyd? re: broken borrowed swing

So DH and I are in a tricky situation, and I need your opinions.

Here is the story:

Our good friends were given a used swing (they are having a baby in Nov.) Friends let us borrow the swing until then. Now its not working so well, we've tried to change the batteries, but its just tuckered out. We didn't do anything specific to cause it to break, it just stopped working out of the blue.

Do we need to buy them a new swing? I don't know what to do because they had gotten it used and it seems to me that it would have broken anyway - however, it broke while we had it...

Re: wwyd? re: broken borrowed swing

  • I would say that you should offer to either buy another used swing, or contribute to the cost of a new one. I know it wasn't anything you did, but it still seems like the right thing to do. I would think that they would probably say not to worry about it, but it would be nice to offer to pay for part of a new one.

  • I'd say tell them it broke so you buy one, and you'll let them borrow it when their baby comes....or you buy it and give it to them in November.

  • are you sure it is broke?  The more your baby weighs the higher speed you sometimes need to use.  My DD is almost 10 pounds and I  can't use the slower speeds anymore, especially when the batteries are ready to go.

  • I would just tell them what happend and depending on how much they paid for it, it might not be that big of a deal.  But if they want it replaced check out Amazon or Craiglist for used ones...plus Garage/Yard Sale season is fast approaching.
  • I would say the same as PP, either buy her a used one or contribute to a new one.

  • We have a used swing and it's also tuckering out...so I know it's not your fault.  I'd offer to pay towards another swing.  I wouldn't want to pay 100% for a brand new swing since you were using a used one.
  • I agree with everyone else; buy a used one for them.
